This pc had a "google redirect Trojan" then after Kaspersky fixed everything about a week later it wouldn't boot up, just a flashing cursor in the upper left corner of the screen.

After dinking around for a week and saving most of the data by booting to linux with a cd rom I started to try to find out why windows wouldn't go.

When I looked at the MBR it didn't look right comparing it to the examples I could find on the web. It looked more like Vista than the XP thats on the box, based on the position of the Invalid partition table text. In fact it was 1 bite farther in the file than the Vista example and 30-40 bites after the XP samples I could find. So I got a XP install disk, and ran fixmbr.

The box booted right up.

I'm running a full scan and an update from Kaspersky right now, but I think there is something bad in there. After all MBR's don't just change themselves to that extent.

I'm thinking a nasty that used Vista's MBR as a pattern.

But I'm more of a DOS 5.0 / OS/2 3.0 kinda guy so I could use some expert advise......
