Hello riggergirl and welcome to TSF,

Just some minor entries here that we can take care of now, but they aren't causing the problems you describe. We'll begin with the basic cleaning:

Download Spybot 1.4 from this site Spybot 1.4. Install the program, update the definitions file, click on 'Immunize' and run a scan. Fix all the entries, which are indicated in RED.

Please download Adaware SE and install it if you don't have it already. Make sure it's the newest version and check for any updates before running it. Go to this Site to get the plug-in for fixing VX2 variants. Also make sure to Customize the settings in Adaware for better scan results. Run the scan and fix everything that it finds.

Download CleanUp! (Alternate Link if main link doesn't work) and install it. Do not run it yet.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://srch-qus9.hpwis.com/
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://qus9.hpwis.com/
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://srch-qus9.hpwis.com/
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://srch-qus9.hpwis.com/
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://srch-qus9.hpwis.com/
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE
O9 - Extra button: Related - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm

CleanUp! deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp!.

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu). Set the program up as follows:
*Click "Options..."
*Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
*Put a check next to the following:
-Empty Recycle Bins
-Temporary Internet Files
-Delete Cookies
-Delete Prefetch files
-[X]Scan local drives for temporary files (Please uncheck this option)
-Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program. Reboot/logoff when prompted.

Reboot back into Normal Mode.

Perform an online scan using Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan - requires Internet Explorer

  1. Click on the Scan your PC button & a 'pop up' window shall appear. * ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it
  2. Click On 'Scan Now'
  3. Enter your e-mail address & click 'Scan Now' ...begins downloading Panda's ActiveX controls.- 8MB
  4. Begin the scan by selecting My Computer
    * You needn't remain online while it's doing the scan but you have to re-connect after it has finished to see the report.
  5. If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report. Click on see report
  6. Then click Save report
  7. Post the contents of the report in your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.

* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Hi,

If those entries aren't showing in Safe Mode, do the fixes from Normal Mode.

We need any HijackThis logs scanned from Normal Mode. Please scan again (from Normal Mode) and post the log here. Also, need the results of the Panda scan.

Ok, let's use another tool to see what may be going on.

Please empty any Quarantine folder in your antivirus program and purge all recovery items in the Spybot program (if you use it) before running this tool.

Download the Mwav virus checker at http://www.mwti.net/products/mwav/mwav.asp (Use Link 3)

1. Save it to a folder.
2. Reboot into Safe Mode.
3. Double click the Mwav.exe file. This is a stand alone tool and NOT just a virus checker......so it won't install anything.
4. Select all local drives, scan all files, and press SCAN. When it is completed, anything found will be displayed in the lower pane.
5. In the Virus Log Information Pane......
Left click and highlight all the information in the Lower pane --- Use CTRL C on your keyboard to copy everything found in the lower pane and save it to a notepad file
*Note* If prompted that a virus was found and you need to purchase the product to remove the malware, just close out the prompt and let it continue scanning. We are not going to use this to remove anything...but to ID the bad files.

Once you copy that to a Notepad file...highlight the text and copy it here.

I think that my main problem is that I can not update windows I keep getting a pop up that says the following updates could not be installed "Update for Windows XP (KB898461)" .
everything now is working good before I could only go on to sites that I bookmarked.

Hi,

I haven't had that happen in a long time, so bear with me. I believe once you get the error that the update failed, there is a place to click for 'More Info' or something like that in that error box. See if you have that option and post whatever it says here.

I want to thank you for your help. I went to the microsoft updates troubleshooting and found out my problem and I fixed it myself. I just had to stop the automatic updates and delete files that were in the %windir%\SoftwareDistribution called datastore and now I am all up to date and my computer is working like new.If I have anymore problems I will be sure to come here for the fast friendly help.

Good. Thanks for letting us know.

Even though your system was clean, here's some information for you:

I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles:

HOW DID I GET INFECTED IN THE FIRST PLACE? http://forums.net-integration.net/index.php?showtopic=3051

THE ANTI-SPYWARE TUTORIAL http://www.greyknight17.com/spyware.htm#prevent

MAKING INTERNET EXPLORER SAFER http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/Making_Internet_Explorer_Safer-tut102.html

Be very wary with any security software that is advertised in popups or in other ways. They are not only usually of no use, but often have malware in them.

More information and downloads are available at the following links:

Spyware Blaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
Spyware Guard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.

Firefox www.mozilla.org/products/firefox - Use this alternate browser. While Internet Explorer is not a bad browser, almost every exploit crafted is targeted to take advantage of an IE weakness.

Sun's Java http://java.com/en/index.jsp - It's much more secure than Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine.
