I would try a safe recovery, this is installing WinXP overitself. Just boot to CD then go through the process has if you were installing for the first time but steer it towards your existing Partition. This will clean up your software coruption. Have to disagree with you though on your point about MS, their knowledge base is one of the best tools on the web hands down. I can't tell you how many times its saved my *** or made me look like boy genius at work. You just have to know how to ask it for info(its no google if you know what I mean).

I agree

The knowledge base is not that bad you just have to navigate different. As far as your problem(s) you should not have to reinstall the OS to uninstall any application, if you cant use windows uninstaller off the control panel and you cant use the apps uninstall (if it came with one) then you could always uninstall the app. using the old dos method of just removing the directory and then finding and deleteing corisponding reg. entrys in the windows regeditor (NOT FOR NOVICE USERS) got to make that point if you have trouble navigating AOL then I sugest you just take thedeuce75's advice but if not there is really no reason to go throu all that crap of a reinstall.

To clearify: When you boot the the XP cd, let it load the modules. Press enter to install. Accept the agreement and it should have a box right after that with the partiton that has your XP installed. At that point you should be able to hit "R" and follow the promps

Nope, sorry that’s wrong repair and safe recovery are two different things. Follow my instructions above if you want to do a safe recovery.
