help!.. could not find C:\WINDOWS\system32\smss.exe

good day guys!.. whenever I boot my computer there's this error message which says Windows could not find "C:\WINDOWS\system32\smss.exe" ... and I can't remember the rest.. this also happens when I ended EXPLORER.EXE in task manager and enabled it again with Run...

uhh.. does that mean there's nothing wrong with my pc? XD
well its running and shows no issues..apart frm that annoying error, u can go to start > run > msconfig and hit enter.

ok, i did what you said and..there's no program that loads smss.exe..
then it was just windows being a pain, see if it causees any issues (it shouldnt)
then i think your all clear
yay im clear.. my pc has no other issues except for that error message with its annoying error sound..


well.. as long as there are no other problems.. im clear right?.. :grin:

From your logfile
C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe is a legitimate Windows file

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=explorer.exe "C:\WINDOWS\smss.exe" is a virus/trojan.
Notice smss.exe is not in System32

Run your antivirus and if it does not remove it...

Dunedin, i have that file in my Windows file..
Its even set to install from my XP disc...

I have 2 copies of the file smss.exe

C:\Windows\system32
C:\Windows\System32\dllcache

None in C:\Windows. As far as I know it is not supposed to be there
