help! Browser and antivirus not working

hi
i recently bought a new laptop it runs on windows xp. I dont really know that much about computers. But i think i must have a virus. I have bought it with me today to work and i am going to take it to the computer shop to see if they can fix it, unless i can get some help.

Ok here goes...
My laptop is pretty much brand new bought it just before christmas and runs very fast. But recently it has been taking about 2 minutes to get to the log in screen. Then about 5 minutes to get to the desktop screen.
I will then click on my internet brower and it opens but i cant connect to any websites its as if i am not connected to the internet. But i can connect and talk to people over msn.. weird
Also my norton anti virus doesnt start when i click on the icon once. I click on it the second time then it starts to load up but it stay sort of stays half loaded.
i press ctrl+alt+Delete and it says its running but its obviously not..
Please could you help me i would really appreciate it..

Hi.,

You may want to check for malware with help from your Security Analysts.

Please follow MicroBell's 5 Step process outlined here

After running through all the steps, best thing to do is have one of the HijackThis helpers take a look at a log.

Please download HijackThis - this program will help us determine if there are any spyware/malware on your computer. Double-click on the file you just downloaded.
Click on the "Unzip" button to install. It will by default install to the directory - C:\PROGRAM FILES\HIJACKTHIS\

Double click on HijackThis.exe to run the program.

1. If it gives you an intro screen, just choose 'Do a system scan and save a logfile'.
2. If you don't get the intro screen, just hit Scan and then click on Save log.
3. Post the hijackthis.log file in the HijackThis Log Help forum. Do not fix anything in HijackThis since they may be harmless.
