My computer has apparently taken ill with bloodhound.w32.ep
Norton reported i was infected with bloodhound.w32.ep
The symptoms:
my computer wouldn't boot up in regular mode; wall paper replaced with black
screens, task manager says explorer and other programs not responding, task
manager also shows it is jammed with dozens of <unknown> or Popuper programs. Get messages that system resources are dangerously low.
system restore will not work
Started in safe mode -- computer would not recognize cd drive to run norton
antivirus by cd. it would not run norton from the hard drive, giving me an
error message that indicated my wininet.dll file was missing or corrupted.
I changed my boot sequence to start with the cd drive. Norton ran from disk
(2004 edition) for six hours before reporting it had not found any virus.
I tried to get on the internet from safe mode but could not.
Restarted in safe mode and deleted a file i found called popuper.
System now boots but will run almost no programs, including norton or internet connection or spybot, saying wininet.dll file is missing or corrputed, or, alternatively, that the path to the program's exe file cannot be found.

Any help would be appreciated. :4-dontkno

Hello and Welcome to TSF

Download and install: HiJackThis.

(Always create a Folder for HiJackThis anywhere but your Temp/Temporary Internet Folders or Desktop. A good place to make a folder would be in My Documents, as this is where it will save the backup files needed if there's a problem.)

Then doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Do A System Scan And Save Log". Make sure all Windows and Browsers are closed.
When the scan is finished, best to save your text file in the same folder as where you put HiJackthis.

IMPORTANT!!!
Create a New Topic and include a fresh HJT log in the HiJackThisLog Help Forum and Copy/Paste the info from your saved Hijackthis log file into your new topic.

A Moderator/ Security Team Analyst will give you instructions.

***DO NOT TRY TO FIX ANYTHING, MAJOR DAMAGE CAN BE DONE TO YOUR SYSTEM IF THIS TOOL IS USED INCORRECTLY, PLEASE WAIT FOR AN ANALYST/MODERATOR TO GIVE YOU INSTRUCTIONS***

Always describe your problem and any programs you have used to try to resolve your issue. Your description can go a long way to solving/repairing your particular issue.

database problems

sUBS posted a proposed series of actions I should take to fix this problem, such as downloading and running smitrem.zip, Cleanup!, Wininet.dll, CWshredder, hoster and Delo15domains.inf.

I printed the directions which have since vanished due the TSF site's database crash last night. If sUBS sees this and could repost, i would appreciate it.

That said, I tried following sUBS instructions which started with running cwshredder. unfortunately, when i tried to run swshredder (by double-clicking, right clicking and using the 'open command' and using the run commend from the start menu), i recieved the following two error messages:

"A required .dll file, C:\WINDOWS\STSTEM\Wininet.dll was not found."

The second error message read:

"Windows cannot find C:\WINDOWS\DESKTOP\cwshredder.exe. You may have typed the name incorrectly in the Run Dialog.or another open program cannot find a system file. To search for a file, click the Start button and then click Search"

Did as it advised, found cwshrreder where it was supposed to be and still could not get it to run.

Given his warning not to deviate at all from his instructions, including the order in which he recommended they be executed, I did not try to skip that step and go on to the next.

I am assuming however that when I try to run Cleanup!, Hoster, or any of the others you suggested downloading, the same thing will occur.

As always, any help would be appreciated.

Mike,

Sorry bout the delay. Been caught up with some database problem of my own. Was migrating Window onto a new hard disk. Still not done yet but enough to browse.

Go to this website & download wininet.dll - http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?wininet
Extract/unzip the contents to this location - C:\WINDOWS\STSTEM\Wininet.dll
This should re-enable things for you.

If possible, please post the last instructions I gave you. I cant recall the exact details of my last instructions.

THanks for the help -- will advise.
