I am running windows xp and when I click on the help and support in the start menu it says " windows can not find helpctr.exe". I have not deleted it but I don't know where it is. Also when I click the run box and type in msconfig, it does the same thing. A box pops up saying that windows can not find msconfig. Does anyone know how I can get those back? Thanks
Try running sfc /scannow have your XP cd handy and type it in the run box making sure there is a space between sfc and /. Running this tool will verify and replace any files that are a problem.
Sure. Try sfc /scannow ( i dont have much faith in it but.. ) Then we need to find out why they disapeared. Check for malware. Click on greyknights link below and follow the instructions. Then after you are declared clean we might re-install them via .inf's or do a repair installation of the OS. Let us know how you are doing after the clean up. They might as well be fake messages of the malware.
I run adaware, spybot, cleanup, and norton anti virus and cwshedder at least once or twice a week and nothing really ever shows up. I don't know what sfc/scannow is. Also I do not have the XP cd, it was already installed when I bought the computer. I do believe that msconfig and the help and support is still on my computer, it just won't bring it up. One of Greyknight suggestions was to bring up msconfig and click on the startup tab for something but I can't get there. Thanks
I think what PurpleSky and quizme are trying to say is do this:
Go to Start > Run > Type cmd > Type sfc /scannow
This will determine if there are any corrupt or missing windows files. Have your Windows XP CD ready. If you don't have your Windows XP CD, I'd call Tech Support from your computer company.
msconfig is the diagnostic box that will tell you what loads up at the start of windows every time you boot up. (This is usually used when people complain about slow boot ups)
I ran sfc/scannow and when it finished it just closed so I guess every thing was alright. I also typed msconfig in the windows search and it found the files and I can open it that way but I still can not open msconfig if I type it in the run box. I still can not find my help and support files. I have a sony computer so do I need to call them to get a copy of XP cd? I ran a scan at panda software and here is what it found. What else do I need to do?
