Hi Justin....welcome to TSF!! Are you serving apprenticeship as an electrician or do they do things differently in Canada?? I am a journeyman carpenter....which means I have completed my training and therefore I can venture forth (travel = journey) and ply my trade. At least that is my interpretation.......was a member UBC&J (United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners) for 22yrs and am now retired.

yeah we do it the same here, completed my welding training, and got a job on the oil rigs as a welder/electrician so im getting paid j man welding rate and doing pretty much all welding... but the hours worked are counting for my electrical apprenticeship! works out great

its probably the same in the US you need a certain amount of hours before you can go to the schooling every year?

Not sure of the requirements used today. When I started it was 4yrs starting at 60% of journeyman scale with an increase of 5% every 6mo. I had enough experience to come in as a full journeyman and never went through apprenticeship.....that does not mean that I didn't learn more during my career. I did feel bad at first, by not going through the apprenticeship program, but when veteran carpenters turned to me for advice I got over it real quick. Had my own crew within a few months....doing layout/framing/ drywall in a 23 story building. Found a niche in hardware install and stayed til the building was completed. Made my travels and worked on many commercial buildings til '83....travel was over and I locked in with my last employer. We did part ways in '99 after a disagreement......but remain on good terms and I work for them when they need manpower. My oldest son is a key person for that company.....if the work is available, they will hire any of my 4 sons.

Ok, enough of my drivel.....

Welcome to TSF!! When it comes to being an electrician, if you touch the wrong wires together you have gone back to being a welder.....
