Welcome Jane,

First thing you should check the system event viewer to confirm it is not hard disk errors.

Right click on the My Computer Icon on desktop and select manage.
Select event viewer and look at the system log.
You should be able to see the events from most recent at top.
if you have hard disk problems it should be obvious here look for the errors with red dots.

If it is not a disk problem you can see if you can find the dump message in the events for the next clue.

If the problem is not disk and started in the last week or so you could try doing a system restore to before the problem.

When starting safe mode the option to go to safe mode press yes or to system restore press no.

Pick your restore date and see how it goes.

Also if you machine is creating dump files you can attach one to the post and we can look at it. To check if your machine is creating them and where they are do the following.

Right click on My Computer and select Properties.
Under Advanced Tab go down to the Starup/Recovery area and click Settings
From there at the bottom it should give you a box called Dump File and show the path where it writes the files.
******************************************
Let us know what you find.
