1. What is the fatel error saying?
2. What are the specs on the computer (process speed, memory, etc.)?
:coffee:

Welcome to the board, and don't be to hard on yourself you know enough about computers to come to TSF with your problems :D

Also are you typing the drive letter to the cdrom drive before setup.exe if not your more than likely trying to run your Windows setup program in your \windows directory. And that could cause problems.
i am not quite sure what my computers speed, memory etc is as i am at work at the mo. regarding the drive letter i did put it in and okayed it but that was when the error message came up.
Without know the error its kinda hard, but here are some stuff I got from http://techsupport.vuinteractive.com/techsupport/sierra/support.asp

Problem:
"engine start mfc app has encountered a problem and will now close"

Solution:
If you encounter this error, download the update available at:
http://www.zdnet.com/downloads/stories/info/0,10615,91298,.html

Problem:
System Running Too Fast For The Game.
Solution:
This is caused by your system running too fast for the game. The older games were written before today's faster computers existed. They were programmed on slower systems, so the areas that have timers in the programming or require scripts to be played out at a certain speed may have trouble with very fast systems.
For this reason, we have placed some saved games for Space Quest 1(VGA) on the site listed below. All you need to do is save the file to your hard drive. Once the file is downloaded, double click the icon for the downloaded file and it will begin the extraction process. If a default install of the game was done (i.e. no changes were made during the install) it will be this path:
C:\Sierra\Sqcol\Sq1vga
If the game is installed to another drive or directory, please modify the extraction location as necessary. Once extracted into the directory, the save games will be accessible through the 'Restore' screen of the game. The saved games included are listed below for your convenience. Please refer to the readme file for additional information.
ftp://ftp.sierra.com/pub/goodies/pc/sq1vgasg.exe
Save 1 - After Roger has reached the caverns on Kerona for the first time.
Save 2 - After Roger has passed the acid drips for the first time.
Save 3 - After Roger arrives back in the caverns for the second time.
Save 4 - After Roger passes the drips for the second time.
Save 5 - After the skimmer sequence.

ok it is all fixed now and working, it was my fault, the readme said to use setup.exe but that didn't work, so i tried install.exe and it worked.

Glad your up and running again,
