I just installed Ubuntu on a brand new machine. 16.04.3. If the headphones are plugged, the speakers don't work, if speakers are on, it changes to headphone as soon as I plug it.

In 16.04.1, I could manually switch from sound settings headphones or speakers.

I have 4.1 sound system and I did check the auto mute feature in alsamixer. It enables only two speakers, not all 4 like it is when the headphone is NOT plugged in.

Any hope?

Install pavucontrol and check the output configuration

https://www.hecticgeek.com/2011/12/advanced-pulse-audio-ubuntu-linuxconfigurator-pavucontrol/

Normally, if headphones are used then there is no need for speaker output
but if it worked before then sometime will have changed in pulse audio.
The pulse audio control should sort this out.
Yeah I tried that already before posting. But actually what it does that it only enables two speakers, not all 4 of them. I could do it in 16.04.1. Anyways, it's not primarily important.

But please tell me this - I'm noticing some high cpu usage (80-100%) while installing deb packages and while transferring files (usb 3 to usb 3).
Is that normal? It's a new cpu and I didn't notice such activity before.
