Hello! I am having problems with my internet explorer such as; when I go to my 'tools' selection on the tool bar and click it, my pop up blocker is gone. There is a space and arrow for it but no words??? I put my mouse over it and an empty selection box comes up. When I go to microsoft to update it, it wont let me update. Actually, anything I try to update or install wont work???

Can you help me find out what could be hindering this? Here is my log file. Thank you in advance for your help!! (You've fixed my computer before when I was about to lose everything! Thank you soooo much!):

P.S. I am not sure about the google toolbar...I never installed it?? But I see it in my logfile??

Hello and Welcome. Please subscribe to this thread to get immediate notification of replies as soon as they are posted. To do this click Thread Tools, then click Subscribe to this Thread. Make sure it is set to Instant Notification, then click Subscribe.

Before begining the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding. Ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below. Save the following instructions in Notepad as this webpage would not be available when you're carrying out the fix.

It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Google Toolbar gets bundled with Picasa, which I see you do have. You can uninstall Google Toolbar if it bothers you. :sayyes:

Let's see if we can get to the root of your problems. First, I need you to do this:

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

Hi! Thanks for getting back to me so quick. One problem I am having also is when I try to download from the internet the save box comes up for a split second and then disappears...no matter what I do, it wont let me download anything. When I try to unistall from my control panel it wont come up either. It just comes up and 'poof' it's gone! It wont let me free up room on my computer.

So I can't download SDFix :4-dontkno

Anything else I can do?

I await your reply

Your system may have more corruption than a malware cleaning can resolve.

Do you have access to another computer and removable media (USB Drive, CDR, floppy disk). Family, friend, neighbor?

Download SDFix on this clean system, and carry it to the infected machine via the removable media, then follow the previous instruction.

Let me know....

I figured out how to download from the web by right clicking on the link and choosing save file as. So I can download that way. I managed to remove a lot of programs and file manually instead of through the control panel. That freed up a lot of room.

So we can continue now.

Ok....however, you may still have corruption issues beyond malware. Let's see what we can see.

Please perform this general system scan and cleaning to see if anything else is lurking.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Download AVG Anti Spyware

Use the link at the bottom of the page under "AVG Anti-Spyware Free for Windows"

  • Install AVG Anti Spyware
  • Double-click the icon on Desktop to launch AVG
  • On the top of the main screen click Shield
  • Click the word active to change it to inactive
  • On the top of the main screen click Update.
  • Then click on Start Update. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  • Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
When you have finished updating, EXIT AVG Anti Spyware. Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.

If you have trouble with the updater, you can use this manual installer for the updated definitions:

You can get manual updates from this page:

http://www.ewido.net/en/download/updates/

Choose Full database, download it to your desktop, and run the executable. Be sure it installs in the same location as AVG AS, which it should by default.

Direct link to Full Database exe:

Download and install CleanUp!
NOTE: CleanUp! deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, make a backup of these before running CleanUp!. Do NOT run this program if you have XP Professional 64 bit edition. If you're unsure please do not run it! If you don't already know, you're probably not using XP64, but you can download & run this tool to find out for sure.....http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/xp_whichcpu.exe

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files (if present)
  • Cleanup! All Users
  • Click on the Temporary Files tab and uncheck the box for Scan drives for files matching if it’s checked.
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

It may ask you to log-off/reboot at the end, if it does please do so.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Login on your usual account. Make sure to close any open browsers.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Run AVG Anti-Spyware with it's updated definitions:(...it's important that all windows must be closed)
  • Click Scanner
  • Click on the Scan tab
  • Click Complete System Scan to begin scanning.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
  • Once finished, click the Save report button, then click Save Report As and save it to your desktop. (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).

Restart in normal mode.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan
  1. Click on
located at the bottom of the page.
  2. A "pop up" window will appear. * Please ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it *
  3. Enter your e-mail address, country, and state & click "Free Online Scan" *The download of the 8 MB Panda's ActiveX control will take place*
Begin the scan by selecting
  • If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report.
  • Please ignore any entry it finds and the offer to buy the program to remove the entry, as we will address this later.
  • Click on
    then click
* You needn't remain online while it's doing the scan but you have to re-connect after it has finished to see the report.
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Trouble with ActiveX

:4-dontkno Okay, I've done everything you've asked but it will not let me do a Panda Activescan. When it say's "Click the bar above to start the download", no bar show's up? The sound that plays when a bar used to appear for me sounded but no information bar showed up. So it wont let me install the ActiveX.

Here is my log files from AVG Anti-Spyware and HJT file:

I started having problem's when I got a new antivirus program installed on the computer, eTrust EZ Antivirus. I want to uninstall it once the computer is fixed. I can't even go to other antivirus sites to do free scans anymore. :sigh:

I appreciate all your help by the way!!

I see cracks and limewire on this system, not a good combination. It can lead to these sorts of problems.

Download Hoster.
  • Unzip Hoster to it's own folder.
  • Run Hoster.exe
  • Click "Make Hosts Writable?" in the upper right corner.
  • Click Restore Microsoft's Original Hosts file and then click OK.
  • Close Hoster.
  • Note: If a custom Hosts file was in place, you'll have to edit those entries back in.

Can you now access antivirus sites?

* Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/cureit.exe
  • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
  • Once the short scan has finished, mark the drives that you want to scan.
  • Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
  • Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
  • Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found:
  • If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:

This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
  • After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
  • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit.
  • Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously in your next reply.

I had purchased Limewire a couple years ago and have since uninstalled it because anything I tried to download had bugs in it. It was good at first.

I followed your instructions on the Hoster program. Still cannot do the panda activescan.

While doing the CureIt scan it stopped almost at the end. It said scan was inturupted by user. But it did find a few things before it stopped scanning. Here they are:

Before begining the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding. Ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below. Save the following instructions in Notepad as this webpage would not be available when you're carrying out the fix.

It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

S& D Spybot's Tea Timer

While TeaTimer is an excellent tool for the prevention of spyware, it can sometimes prevent HijackThis from fixing certain things.
Please disable TeaTimer for now until you are clean. TeaTimer can be re-activated once your HijackThis log is clean.
  • Open Spybot Search & Destroy.
  • In the Mode menu click "Advanced mode" if not already selected.
  • Choose "Yes" at the Warning prompt.
  • Expand the "Tools" menu.
  • Click "Resident".
  • Uncheck the "Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active." box.
  • In the File menu click "Exit" to exit Spybot Search & Destroy.
  • See this link for a tutorial

Download ResetTeaTimer.bat by right-clicking on the link, and choosing Save As. Save it to your desktop, or somewhere you can find it easily.
Double click ResetTeaTimer.bat to remove all entries set by TeaTimer.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan Only'. Check the following entries if they exist (make sure you do not miss any) and click Fix Checked

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {9394EDE7-C8B5-483E-8773-474BF36AF6E4} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {AA58ED58-01DD-4d91-8333-CF10577473F7} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {C2EEB4FA-B6D6-41b9-9CFA-ABA87F862BCB} - (no file)

Close HijackThis now.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If this folder still exists, you may want to consider deleting it, as it contains infected files:

C:\limewire downloads\

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CLEAR & RESET SYSTEM RESTORE'S CACHE

Go to Start >> Run - type or copy/paste control sysdm.cpl,,4 & press Enter

* Tick on the checkbox - Turn off System Restore on all drives
* Click Apply

Turn it back 'On' by unticking the same checkbox & click Apply, and then OK

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I may have misunderstood your statement

I can't even go to other antivirus sites to do free scans anymore.
So, you can access the sites, but the scans don't run?

Make sure the following items are correctly set

Please check your ActiveX security settings (Start -> (Settings) -> Control Panel -> Internet Options, Security Tab -> Internet -> Custom Level).

ActiveX controls and plug-ins
* Download signed ActiveX controls (Prompt)
* Download unsigned ActiveX controls (Disable)
* Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe (Disable)
* Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins (Enabled) (This actually refers to Java and Flash, not ActiveX)
* Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting (Prompt)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If it fails to allow you access to online scans, please be precise in any error messages you receive.

If you want recommendations for excellent free Anti-Virus programs, I can provide that info when we're done.

Please post a new HJT log.

If Internet Explorer is still not functioning correctly, we may have to send you over to the Internet Explorer forum, as it needs more attention and expertise than I can give it. The missing info bar indicates base corruption in IE6. The members and staff who frequent that forum will be better able to help you with that.

Finally!

Okay, I deleted all of the limewire downloads file. I did all the scans and I fixed the BHO files in my HijackThis log. I was then able to update microsoft internet explorer which brought back my pop-up blocker!!

Do I need to turn my Spybot's Tea Timer back on? Anyway, here is my new log file and thank you, thank you, thank you! Also, I was able to run the panda virus scan. It took over 4 hours and I ended up stopping it because after the 4 hours it wasn't even 1/4 done. I will attach the saved file from it.

Ok, we're making progress....but even though it's taking an incredibly long time, I really need a complete Panda scan.

Let's leave TeaTimer off for now.

Also, please provide an Uninstall List, so I can see if any of those Panda finds you did provide have corresponding malware programs installed.

Create an uninstall list:

  • Open HiJackThis
  • Click on the button " Open the Misc Tools section"
  • Click on the Box that says "Open Uninstall Manager"
  • Click on the button "Save list"
  • Copy and past the List from the notepad file into your post

Sorry that took so long....you must have a massive amount of disk space. The Uninstall list did provide some info.

Download Blockrem from HERE Unzip it to its own folder on your desktop.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Login on your usual account. Make sure to close any open browsers.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if they exist:

RelevantKnowledge
Select CashBack

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Do you know what this program is?

1myhalloth.zip

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Go to Start>Run then copy and paste, or type the following, then press Enter:

regsvr32 /u occache.dll

Click OK on the box that appears.

Next, Delete these files/folders if present:

c:\windows\system32\ap2nqrd4.dat
c:\windows\system32\rlls.dll
c:\windows\downloaded program files\setup4002b.ini
c:\windows\system32\cache32_rtneg3
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\hochkaod3_.ini

Now, Go to Start>Run then copy and paste, or type the following, then press Enter:

regsvr32 occache.dll

Click OK on the box that appears.

---------------------------------------------------

  • open the Blockrem folder on your desktop and double-click blockrem.bat (this is the file with the gear icon) to run it.
  • Once it is running please follow the onscreen instructions.
  • Reboot into normal mode.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name. In your case,

    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 1
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2

  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.

  • After the install is complete, go back into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon.
  • Under Temporary Internet Files, click the Delete Files button.
  • There are three options in the window to clear the cache - Leave ALL 3 Checked

    • [*]Downloaded Applets
      [*]Downloaded Applications
      [*]Other Files
  • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open Hijack This and click on 'Do a System Scan and save a Logfile'. Save the log file and post it here.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How is your system behaving?
