Two days ago I was playing games with some of my discord friends and I started having issues with my computer when i attempted to launch sea of thieves for the first time in months. The game kept reading a error message as soon as i would try to get into the online features of the game. I restarted the game a couple of times and it kept having the same issue.
After like the fifth time of trying to restart the game i went to open a google chrome tab and see what was happening. With in like ten seconds of opening chrome my computer went from normal to being as slow as a vista pc in the 2000's. Then it crashed, I assumed maybe something misfired with the game that I still had open in the other desktop and restarted my pc. After restarting the pc boot really slow and shut down again. Over the course of 15 min it went from being able to post to just sitting on the bios screen to not even showing anything but a black screen.
I went to bed and started troubleshooting the next morning, the pc was posting in the morning leading me to believe that something had overheated. I check my task manager and sure enough my cpu was now only firing off at around .5 GHz. The system was extremely sluggish and I had troubled doing anything on the pc.
I took the whole pc apart and cleaned out all the parts and cooling just to make sure that everything was still in one piece I even went ahead and applied some new thermal paste to my cooling loop. The only notible change was that now i could get the pc to post frequently. It was still running poorly. I went into the bios just to make sure and the cpu want overclocked. For safe measure i went ahead and reset the clock speeds and turned the fans to always on high and left it there for the day. It is currently 1 am on the 26th of December and i am typing from the pc in question.
it has had some time to chill and not be running over the course of the last couple of days and as im typing and looking and the system performance read out it is getting 2 GHz pretty consistently and hasn't crashed in the last thirty minuets. as soon as a do anything to try and put minimal stress on the cpu it drops back down to like 1 - .5 ish GHz.
So another variable that i think may be significant is the fact that i have been playing the new cyberpunk game on the pc before these problems started. Idk if its possible that the pc was being taxed to heavily because of poor optimization but The only thing i can think to be the issue is either a motherboard or cpu problem. My money is on the over heating angle.
i checked all the files on the pc and apps and software to make sure there wasn't anything like bloatware making the system run bad. i also took it upon myself to delete around 800 gigs worth of games and files off of my 2tb set up just to really clean up the system.
My real issue now is idk wether or not to just invest in reparing the system or selling all the good parts and starting over. Hear are the system specs for some clarification
AMD Ryzen 7 2700x eight core
gtx 1060 6gb
8gb of ddr4 corsair ram (relatively new)
a one fan corsair closed loop cooling unit
i dont remember the name but an msi mother board
and a gamdias 650 watt power supply
If you can help me id like to now what the issue is and if fixing is worth the money for this old of a system. Just looking for a good second opinion and thank you for reading.
