Have I been Hi-jacked?

906 Views 11 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  Ried
Hi everyone I'm Julles from Australia, my daughter and I use the internet a lot and in the last couple of days (on dial up) the amount of data recieved in 2 hours was 12 million compared to 700 000 odd sent. The compression was also up to 38 % ... we figured we'd been hi-jacked. I've been reading your forum all day and hopefully doing what I've needed to do to be rid of what ever is happening.

We've updated everything, ad-aware, the cleaner, avg-se, ccleaner and run those scan numerous times in safe mode after ticking the show all hidden files and extensions boxes. I downloaded HJT and got the log and now have downloaded the HJT analyzer and this is what the log says, I'd appreciate any help in checking out our logs. Thanks looking forward to hearing back from you Julles and daughter.

Hello Julles (and daughter) and welcome to TSF,

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad since you will not have any of browsers open while you are fixing this. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. Again, you should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab:
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm and then click OK.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

O2 - BHO: DownloadBHO T2BHO - {B1D147E7-873E-4909-8127-695D9BB78728} - (no file)

Reboot back into Normal Mode.

Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan - requires Internet Explorer

  1. Click on the Scan your PC button & a 'pop up' window shall appear. * ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it
  2. Click On 'Scan Now'
  3. Enter your e-mail address & click 'Scan Now' ...begins downloading Panda's ActiveX controls.- 8MB
  4. Begin the scan by selecting My Computer
    * You needn't remain online while it's doing the scan but you have to re-connect after it has finished to see the report.
  5. If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report. Click on see report
  6. Then click Save report
  7. Post the contents of the report in your next reply along with another HijackThis log.
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Hi Ried, Thanks for the warm welcome and help.

I did what you said to do and in Safe mode the 02 Bho ''' wasn't listed anymore so I couldn't check the fix box in HJT ..

I then went back into normal mode and logged onto the net, I started to download the Panda active virus scanner and after 45 min's it really hadn't gone anywhere on the download meter then a message popped up saying an error had occured and I'd need to start again.

Needless to say I've not gotten anywhere and this morning 25 mins into my log on session my recieved bytes are up to 1 800 000 sent 285 00 compression 19% and 1 error recieved.

What would you like me to do now? Thanks so much for your help. Julles
hi Julles,

Let's try this instead:

Please download Ewido Security Suite at http://www.ewido.net/en/download/.

1. Install Ewido Security Suite.
2. When installing, under 'Additional Options' uncheck:
* Install background guard
* Install scan via context menu
3. Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double click it.
4. The program will now open to the main screen.
5. When you run Ewido for the first time, you will get a warning 'Database could not be found!'. Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
6. You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
* On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
* Then click on Start Update.
7. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed. The status bar at the bottom will display 'Update successful'.
8. Exit Ewido. DO NOT scan yet.

If you are having problems with the updater, you can go to http://www.ewido.net/en/download/updates/ to update manually.

Reboot into Safe Mode.

Run Ewido:
*Click [Scanner]
*Click [Complete System Scan] to begin scanning.
*Click [OK] when prompted to clean files
With the first file it prompts to clean, select the option - "Perform action on all infections" - & choose clean and click [OK].

Once finished, click the [Save report] button
Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

Restart your system back into Normal Mode. Run another scan with HijackThis and post the log here along with the results of the Ewido Scan.

Ok thanks Ried, I'm downloading Ewido now it will take an hour or two and then I'll post back to you.
Ok, all done here's the ewido report followed by the Hjt report.

Hello Julles,

It bothers me that this entry:O2 - BHO: DownloadBHO T2BHO - {B1D147E7-873E-4909-8127-695D9BB78728} - (no file) wasn't found by you in the HijackThis scan for you to 'fix' and the Ewido Scan isn't showing anything of consequence.

Let's look a bit deeper:

Right click on http://www.silentrunners.org/Silent Runners.vbs and choose Save As...Save it to your Desktop. Make sure you have disabled any programs that may block/disable scripts (ex: Ad-Watch, TeaTimer, Norton, etc.). Double click on 'Silent Runners' to run it. This will take a few minutes. It will create a file called 'Startup Programs' followed by your computer name and current date. Open up that file and post all the contents here in your next post.
I did run Trojan hunter after speaking with you the first time, maybe that found that file and deleted? Anyway here is the silent runner log you asked for. Again thanks for your help.

In light of your recent issue, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles:

Be very wary with any security software that is advertised in popups or in other ways. They are not only usually of no use, but often have malware in them.

More information and downloads are available at the following links:

Spyware Blaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
Spyware Guard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.

Firefox www.mozilla.org/products/firefox - Use this alternate browser. While Internet Explorer is not a bad browser, almost every exploit crafted is targeted to take advantage of an IE weakness.

Sun's Java http://java.com/en/index.jsp - It's much more secure than Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine.
