Every time I boot up, after a few minutes, I get a dialog box titled "Hardware Installation" which says "The software you are installing for this hardware: Non-Plug and Play Drives" has not passed Windows Logo testing..." yada yada.

I don't know why I am getting this dialog or how to get it to stop.

In Microsoft's infinite wisdom, they don't provide any more information in this dialog box, such as what program is invoking this box. I have not installed any hardware recently

How do I get it to stop?
Ideas?

Thanks.

Ok, just had another look so I'm assuming XP since you posted in the XP forum.

Click Start >> right click my computer and select manage. Then, select device manager and tell me if there are any warning symbols eg yellow question marks etc.

Dave,

Thanks for you help.

I looked in Device Manager, and there are not yellow question marks.
Yes, Windows XP SP3.

What other details?

Did you press OK or Yes? and Not press Cancel. This will then allow what ever wants to install to finish and it won't bother you again. This sounds like a USB drive, SD card, camera or other external device is plugged in. If pressing OK doesn't fix it, then remove all external devices and restart the computer.

>Did you press OK or Yes? and Not press Cancel. I pressed Cancel. > This will then allow what ever wants to install to finish I don't know what it is that is trying to install. That is why I pressed Cancel. I had a rootkit install on my box one time. You know what a PIA that was? I would like to know what is trying to install before I allow it. > This sounds like a USB drive, SD card, camera or other external device is Sure does. But, I have not installed, plugged in, etc any SD card, USB drive, camera, etc. >and restart the computer. I shut the computer off every night, and this dialog comes up every time I turn it on.

press CTRL+ALT+DEl and start the Task Manager/Processes tab. See what device is starting. This is probably not a Rootkit/Virus or Malware as they install quietly and do not require you to click on anything. To end this just click OK or Yes.

The Hardware Installation dialog is from the msiexec.exe Windows Installer system.

See what device is starting.
Task manager doesn't tell you that/ I guess I am not sure what you mean.

Right, I don't think it is either.

To end this just click OK or Yes.
I am not agreeing to install anything unless I know what it is.

msiexec is the windows installer. Usually associated with Office or some other Windows program.
