Heard hard drive clicking and it wouldn't boot into W98, so I installed another hard drive as a master, then set up the "bad" hd as a slave. Computer sees it in cmos. W98SE sees it in computer management and device manager, yet am not able to access it to remove files. Also tried rebooting in DOS mode to look at it, but when I typed drive d and e, it didn't find anything. I'm just wondering if anyone out there has any words of wisdom on how I might be able to access these 3 word docs I need. I also tried it as a slave in another machine with XP Pro. Same results. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

The clicking is a bad sign, you may be out of luck. What exactly does XP-Pro say in Disk Management about the hard disk?

Download and run the hard drive manufactors diag program. it can be downloaded from their web site. It should give you an idea how far gone this drive is and if the data can be recovered.
