What is the proper way to dispose of your hard drive(s) that may contain sensitive data?

Magnet?

The only sure method is to take to it with an axe or a sledgehammer. I know this sounds funny but even after all the software eradication tools have been run on it it is still possible to get data off it. Fully destroying the drive will make it completely unreadable.
Hi,

If the drive still works, the Dban program HERE will most likely do the best job of making the data unreadable. I understand from what I have been told the military uses this program to get rid of sensitive data. However, as others have said, the only guaranteed way to completely get rid of the data is to destroy the drive.
i think melting it would do the job ! but the tool that tumble posted is very nice but i also agree if its not physically damamged then it can be read so open up the case smash the platters with a screw driver (watch out they are sharp) and then close it back up
