Hey guys i bought the evga nvidea geforce 460 superclocked edition 1024mb. I driver swept the graphics cards and updated the newest version off of nvidea site. I lag bad when i put the setting on ultra. My comp is pretty good i think, but correct me if i am wrong.

i think i have some settings that are not correct that is making me lag when playing. my board has another slot and i upraded my powersupply to fit another one of these cards in there if that is what it is going to take. plz let me know. I also downloaded evgas precision over clocking tool, but i am scared to mess with that.

any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks

Well in general any game is going to lag on ultra setting if your using an athlon 64 x2 and two gigs of ddr2. The gpu is a good gpu but the rest of the system specs are lacking some.

Did you install a proper power supply when you added the gpu?

ya i bought a newer bigger power supply to power the card, and went big enough to run another card if needed. i know ram is cheap, how do i know what kind of processor i can upgrade to without changing the MB?

Your motherboard is stuck with the athlon 64 x2 as it's best cpu it supports. It's fine for basic use but in gaming an athlon 64 x2 is just going to be too slow.

As emoson has stated, your hardware is as good as its going to get in its current state. Your really looking at an overhaul at this point to get newer games to run at 30+ frames a second.

what do you suggest for a mb and processor and ram?? i can throw about 1000 at it, i think my psu is plenty good, cd drive, hd is the new mini connector style i cant remember the name but its not the long pin style that goes into the cd drive.

pretty much just a good processor, mb, and ram. would i have to get another gtx 460 and stack it with this one to make it good?

No, SLI and Xfire have a poor performance to cost ratio. You would be better off buying a gtx 570 or 580.

As for a new internals what do you prefer? AMD or intel? Do you plan to overclock any for extra performance?

FYI, the gtx 460 will be plenty for SC 2. My current setup allows for 60 frames a sec on the majority of maps.

Xfire is another way of saying crossfire or dual amd GPU's. An amd system will be alot cheaper than an intel one.

An AMD 870 board and a phenom II quad would do you some good without breaking the bank.

mobo
Newegg.com - ASRock 870 EXTREME3 AM3 AMD 870 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard

memory
Newegg.com - G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Desktop Memory Model F3-10666CL7D-4GBRH

processor
Newegg.com - AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Deneb 3.2GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM3 125W Quad-Core Processor HDZ955FBGMBOX

That is what i have been eyeballing for a new build myself. Feel free to swap the processor out for a faster factory clock, i only picked the slowest of the bunch because i have plans for overclocking. Same thing with the mobo, if you don't like asrock or have another brand you prefer go ahead and pick their version of the board.

The recommended Cpu for Starcraft II is a dual core 2.4 Ghz and your above that so it should run fine. I used a Athlon 64 X2 6000+ till last Christmas and it's fine for gaming. Perhaps not the latest and greatest games on ultra settings, but I ran every game on that that I run on my X4 and my game plays not a huge increase. Better yes, but not astronomical. I can't believe that someone's saying that a dual core is good for basic use, but not for gaming cause that's just plain wrong.

Is it the processors fault for it not being able to run on ultra settings? i watch replays with the guys on ultra and its wayyy nice then the low settings i use. but it does not lag, and i would rather play without lag then look good and during times battles and stuff.

Not all dual core cpu's are good. The athlon 64 x2 isn't like an athlon x2 or athlon ll x2. It's more comparable to a pentium D or original dual core. These older early dual core where basically two single core cpu's on one chip. They work fine when just using windows but anything over basic use stresses them really really easily.

Whether it's a dual core or not the AM2 athlon 64 x2 6000+ is 5 years old and isn't considered very good by today's standards in high end gaming.

However seeing as the op is going for new guts it really will not matter.

The origional question was lagging in Starcraf II and the X2 is not the reason for the lag. I can play Crisis on an X2 6000+ with no problems so it's definatly not a Cpu issue. Old doesn't mean not capable. The q6600 is 4 years old so by your theory it can't play todays high end games. FYI the X2 6000+ 3100Mhz was released in June 2008 and the 6000+ 3000Mhz was in April 2008. Anyways I digress!
