i booted it and it went directly to 'system restore'. i tried a light restore of all windows 7 files but that didn't fix it. next i tried AVG virus scan boot from USB and it found no threats. then i played around with AHCI options but that just caused it to bluescreen so i reset them. now i can boot up and access files and folders, but it seems all the titles are somehow hidden and all windows layouts are distorted. perhaps just a graphic or configuration problem? any ideas?
