What is the make and model# of your computer?
Is this a laptop or desktop?
If a desktop. Do you have a separate video card that you plug your monitor in lower in the case, or do you plug it into the onboard VGA slot up higher next to the USB ports?
Go to the manufacturers support/download drivers site, type in your make and model # and download the Video driver for your model.

Thanks. Make and model are shown below. It's a desktop, and there is no separate video card. Google Earth always worked perfectly until I installed AVG2013 and AVG Tuneup. I have removed AVG and installed Microsoft Security Essentials but it has made no difference. It still says "DirectX mode not supported. NOTE: if the login Status" is blocking access to this window then do the following: click on the login window, press ALT-F4, then read the message below." The details are the same as Jenny72 post: "check32-bit,etc." but alll to no avail. Any login window I encounter does nothing when I press ALT-F4. Is this a login stauts block of some kind? Greatly appreciate any further help. Thanks again.

I realize this is a rather old thread and people may have already solved this issue in various ways. My experience was that I had GE and used it for years on a Win XP-Pro SP3 system. After about a year of not using it I tried it and got the dreaded DirectX Mode Not Supported error. It appears that GE had updated itself (via scheduled tasks) until it was no longer functional on my system. I deleted GE(version 7 as I recall) and downloaded version 6.1.0.50 and also deleted the automatic updating. Works great again.

It's becoming very dangerous to blindly install updates on an older Windows system. In fact, Microsoft would constantly try to download the "killbits" fix which prevented Visual Basic's Communications from working. I guess they never talk to each other at Microsoft. I shut down Windows updates just before they discontinued support.
