I'm sorry if this is in the wrong place and I appologize in advance but I didn't know where this topic would go so... Since this place specified servers... Well... You get the idea... Again I appologize in advance so PLEASE don't say that this belongs in the wrong topic and that I'm bad and such and such...

I'm wondering what would be a good setup for a server and FTS (File Transfer Server) or an online game hosting server. I'm open for ideas and I'm short on money so I'd like a good system that's not so expensive (Parts for servers are so expensive compared to regular computers...). I also like to know prices at newegg.com and CompUSA. Again, I'm open for ideas on good parts. Thanks again in advance guys!!!

Any computer can be a server. (So parts for the server are very expensive, well it depends, what you consider to be a part of a server)
You need a CPU any CPU will do I recommend you get P4 whatever, get a gig+ RAM if you want to run a game server (depends on the game) and the most importnat probubly would be your Hd's. If you can't afford SCSI get SATA it will be just fine. (I recommend you run sme sort of RAID, RAID 1 will protect your files since its mirroring if one disk fails the other just kicks in, for speed I recommend RAID 0 - spanning it speeds data writing and reading, down side if one drive goes everything goes so backup is a must.)

And of course you will need some Server OS, or even an XP (depending on the game requirements)

Just to tell you I DO know that any computer can be a server. (I'm sorry I didn't mean to sound so mean...) I've done a little looking here and there (on Newegg.com) and this is what I found so far:

-TYAN Transport GT20 B5350G20S4H 1U Barebone Server-Rackmount Intel E7320 Dual mPGA604 ZIF Sockets Dual Intel Xeon 800MHz FSB ($760)
-Intel Xeon EM64T 2.8 Nacona 800MHz FSB Socket 604 Processor ($237 x2)
-Rosewill 1GB (2x512MB) 184-pin DDR SDRAM DDR 333 (PC2700) ($87x2)
-Toshiba Black IDE Slim DVD-ROM Drive Model SD-C2732 - OEM ($44)
-Western Digital Caviar SE WD3200JD 320GB 7200RPM SATA150 HD - OEM ($160-$25 rebate=$135)
-Microsoft Windows XP MEdia Center Edition 2005 OS - OEM ($130)
-Rosewill 1GB (2x512MB) 184-pin DDR SDRAM DDR333 (PC2700) ($87)

The SATA RAID is 0/1/10, however, I do not know if it is software RAID or hardware RAID and even if I did know, I would know what that really meant... With the parts mentioned above, I think it'll be a rock solid system that has everything. If I have some money left over, I'm going to buy a floppy drive. (Hey, for $10 it's good to have it just in case). Again, please keep sending those replies. Thanks!

A word to the wise... Keep tabs on DealNews.com and SlickDeals.net They keep tabs on the best deals (with Dell offering some fantastic server deals, especially on PowerEdge). You'll have to check often though, as Dell offers are usually limited to 8k-16k units before they expire, and they fly like hotcakes.

The problem is I'm trying to order everything together so my shipping costs don't skyrocket. Therefore, I don't want to get more than one internet site involved. Also, I don't want to buy a server, I want to make a server.
