I've got a relatively inexpensive CPU cooler with a round contact point. (Meaning the actual place where the heatsink hits the CPU) and I will be replacing my motherboard soon. I was wondering if it would be a good or bad idea to turn the bottom of the heatsink in a lathe, just to smoothe it out. I've got a very high-end Smithy mill/lathe and it is extremely precise.
However precise the lathe may be, the process of lapping a heatsink boils down to microscopic pits and uneven surfaces. Generally when you lap a heatsink, you sand the contact point with progressively finer abrasives until you get a mirror-like reflective finish. While the lathe may be able to true the surface, it won't polish it to where you can count your own beard hairs in the image reflected in it
Ahh okay, I am just going to be getting a modular water cooling system.
