The link below will probably resolve the problem but I'm curious about how the problem came to be in the first place.

I was not attempting a dual boot system. All was well then I noticed a dual boot option during startup with a 25-30 second count down timer. The first selection gives me the message of the corrupt or missing hal.dll - the second loads the OS as before.

When I checked for improper paths one was identified as improper or corrupt but the system would not correct the problem.

I hate these spirious xp enigmas!

Hi Robtrapp

Perhaps it'd be good to take a look & see with Windows Explorer.

Start/All Programs/Accessories/Windows Explorer (or right-click your Start button, and select "Explore", and to see things in a "tree" view - click on the "Folders" icon).

See if you have two Windows installations or not. If you do, someone has run the XP Setup on your system recently.

If you have other questions, let us know

Hal is gone Dave

I am the only one on this PC - Who knows; maybe I'm seeking noturnal thrills from Microsoft?
I was able to repair the problem using the link I pulled off this site (somewhere).
Another mystery (not quite) solved.
