Sounds like the issue that i have due to a trojan crimeware infection. Go to the device manager and click view on the toolbar and select show hidden. in the non-plug and play section you may find that you have VGASAVE. I have this along with terminal mouse, terminal keyboard, terminal joystick, hidmous, hidkeybd.
The best part is i also have all the makings of a plug and play bios - battery, thermals, etc. So that when i pull the battery or cpu fan power my PC keeps running!!! Hope you are just experiencing some graphics card issue. Most likely the signal is such a low hertz that your monitor cant render the graphics. My black screen is running at 16 bit / 30 mhz...
using micro knoppix now to research and get pro help... hence why I am here. good luck to you. send me a msg if you are still having issues. if you have a nvidia or ATI graphics card you can pull it out and use the PEG on board to get visuals during special occassion black outs!!!
