Good Morning All,

I'm having trouble trying to determine if my new 9600GT will overload the existing 300W PSU. The existing card is an Nvidia 6600, and the 12v rail of the PSU is rated at 19A

Sorry if the question is a bit basic but I have searched myself to a standstill.

That card 100% will not work with that powersupply. You need a 500w or greater powersupply with 26 amps on the 12volt rail. Good power supply brands are antec , thermaltake , and corsair. It should cost you a minimum of 60$. Don't run the 9600 till you have one.

Thanks for the replies. Is it too simple for the manufacturers/suppliers to provide these figures for their products?

It's how nvidia and ATI make money. They make general suggestions so that if something fails, the card and/or PSU go out with a bang, and if you try to rma, they can say it's your own fault for an improper PSU and make you pay out ofpocket for new ones.

The trick I fell for is that my HP Pavillion documentation has no mention anywhere of the PSU rating and I could only find the data by opening the PC up and reading the side of the PSU. I actually should have done that before purchasing the 9600, that way I would have purchased a new PSU at the same time. I think I'll go for something around 600W, just to be sure.

Thanks for all your help folks.

I've researched my choice down to either the Corsair HX620 or TX650, to give a bit of headroom and scope for future upgrades.

The main difference I can see is that the HX has 3 x 18A, 12v rails where the TX has a single 52A 12v rail. I can see advantages for each design, is there a show stopper for either configuration, please?

Thanks Emosun,

I picked up the TX for AUD180. It's a long weekend in Australia this weekend (Queen's Birthday you see), so guess what I'll be doing this weekend.

Just for interest sake, the 9600GT came with a combiner for the 12v rail so I could have (apparently) combined 2 of the 18A feeds. Would this have been acceptable?

Well, time for a progress report I guess. I have installed the TX650 and the 9600 GT, and all worked first time. Downloaded the latest driver (175.16), but I can't actually discern a difference from the old 6600. Have I missed something?
