I recently lent my friend a spare laptop I had laying around and when my personal PC went I needed my laptop back. When I got it back he had installed Limewire and downloaded multiple songs all of which I attempted to delete. After deleting them my Kasperky anti-virus went crazy and picked up 4 or 5 infections at once but did not give me any options to remove them or to quarantine them. So I uninstalled Kasperky and installed Avira Anti-virus and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. I recognized a strange process geurge.exe and did a little google search on it. I followed instructions to getting rid of it but it is still there. My computer is still slow and is constantly redirected to sites with internet not loading youtube and other sites as fast as it used to.

Some symptoms include my anti-virus not being able to update. Sometimes my internet explorer will never load pages and I get the feeling it's only when I search up ways of removing viruses. For example loading this section on the forums took 30 minutes and 8 or 9 attempts and same when trying to search for anti-viruses. No problem loading just straight google though. Also there are two html/webgen trojans that my anti-virus keeps picking and quarantining.

Here are the logs:

Hi Feircepc and Welcome to TSF,

You may wish to subscribe to this thread (if you haven't already) to get immediate notification of replies as soon as they are posted. To do this click Thread Tools, then click Subscribe to this Thread. Make sure it is set to Instant Notification, then click Subscribe.

------------------------------

Before beginning the fix, read this post completely. If you have any questions, please ask them before you begin. Then either print out, or copy this page to Notepad and save to your desktop for reference as you will not have any browsers open while you are carrying out portions of these instructions.

It is IMPORTANT to carry out the instructions in the sequence listed below.

-----------------------------

I am sorry to tell you that one or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan / rootkit .

This type of infection allows hackers to remotely control your computer, log keystrokes, steal critical system information, and download and execute files without your knowledge.

If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation. Please refer to Microsoft's Online Safety article for tips on creating a strong password.

Do not change passwords or do any transactions from the infected computer until it has been cleaned.

-----------------------------

Please note that these fixes are not instantaneous. Most infections require more than one round to properly eradicate.

Stay with me until given the 'all clear' even if symptoms diminish. Lack of symptoms does not always mean the job is complete.

Kindly follow my instructions and please do no fixing on your own or running of scanners unless requested by me or another helper at this forum.

-------------------------------

Please also note that the forum is very busy and if I don't hear from you within three days, this thread will be closed.

-----------------------------

Refer to the ComboFix User's Guide.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations to your desktop, but do not run it yet.

Link 1
Link 2

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with ComboFix.

You can get help on disabling your protection programs here and/or here.

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:
DDS::
uInternet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:5577
uInternet Settings,ProxyOverride = <local>

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Your desktop may go blank. This is normal. It will return when ComboFix is done. ComboFix may reboot your machine. This is normal.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply. But make sure you have re-enabled your anti virus and anti malware programs before you reply.

Hi feircepc,

Read through this entire procedure and if you have any questions, please ask them before you begin. Then either print out, or copy this page to Notepad and save to your desktop for reference as you will not have any browsers open while you are carrying out portions of these instructions.

--------------------------
WARNING -THIS MACHINE DOES NOT HAVE THE RECOVERY CONSOLE INSTALLED !!
Did you click 'Yes' when ComboFix prompted you to install the Recovery Console? What happened?

We need to install Microsoft Recovery Console before we can continue further with the fix.

With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have the Windows Recovery Console pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Go to Microsoft's website => http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994

Scroll down to Step 1, and select the download that's appropriate for your Operating System. Download the file & save it as it's originally named.

Note: If you have SP3, use the SP2 package.

---------------------------
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon, or they may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you are unsure of how to do it, please read here and/or here.

    • Referring to the picture above, drag the setup package onto ComboFix.exe and drop it.

    • Follow the prompts to start ComboFix and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Recovery Console.

  • At the next prompt, click 'Yes' to run the full ComboFix scan. (Your desktop may go blank, it will return when ComboFix is done, and ComboFix may reboot your machine. This is normal)

Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

  • When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply. But make sure you have re-enabled your anti virus and anti malware programs before you reply.

--------------------------------

NEXT

Download the look.zip from the attachment to your desktop, and extract "look.bat" (Right click on 'look.zip', select 'Extract Here').

Double click on " look.bat " and copy/paste the log that pops up into your next reply.

--------------------------------

[HKLM\~\services\sharedaccess\parameters\firewallpolicy\standardprofile\GloballyOpenPorts\List]
"443:TCP"= 443:TCP:443
"21:TCP"= 21:TCP:21
Do you happen to know why those two ports, i.e. 443 and 21, (should) open? Is it needed by your Internet Service Provider (ISP), or by any program you're running?

---------------------------------

I do not see any evidence of any AntiVirus being installed onboard. Is there any special reason why that is so?

Do you still experience internet connection problem? How is your system behaving?

And please do NOT attach the logs unless specifically requested to do so.

The ports 443, 80, and 21 were opened by my friend when he said he lost internet connection and was advised to open those ports. After that he said the internet would work. The computer is much more responsive but at times I still get shut out from the internet and it won't load any pages. The anti-virus was installed from a thumb drive because at the time whatever virus was on here prevented me from downloading any kind of anti-virus/malware software. So I went on a spare computer and downloaded the install files onto a thumb drive.

Oops... my mistake  , I overlooked your log with the others. You do have Avira installed as your AntiVirus.

The ports 443, 80, and 21 were opened by my friend when he said he lost internet connection and was advised to open those ports. After that he said the internet would work.
Well, those ports aren't supposed to open if not technically needed by your ISP or any program running onboard. Let's try closing them and see if you have internet connection, shall we?

-----------------------------------------------------------

Read through this entire procedure and if you have any questions, please ask them before you begin. Then either print out, or copy this page to Notepad and save to your desktop for reference as you will not have any browsers open while you are carrying out portions of these instructions.

------------------------------------------------------------

Viewpoint Media Player <<< This is considered foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval, but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". Please read here and here.

Should you decide to uninstall it, you can do so via Control Panel > Add/Remove programs, and please delete the associated folder under the following path:

c:\program files\Viewpoint

The following is referring to RegTweaker
We do not recommend the use of registry cleaners / tools due to the following facts:
  • Registry tools can cause irreparable damage to your Operating System
  • Registry tools can, as a result of the above, render your pc to be inoperable.
Our colleague miekiemoes has an excellent writeup here.

This is done, assuming that the major audience here at this board might be inexperienced users and thus a suggested safeguard from our side.
If you feel you have the need for a registry cleaner, then you are just as welcome to keep it. This is what we refer to an "optional fix" and is up to the user, so just take this as a recommendation from my side.

Save this as CFScript.txt

Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. If you are unsure of how to do it, please read here and/or here.

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply.

**Note**

When CF finishes running, the ComboFix log will open along with a message box--do not be alarmed. With the above script, ComboFix will capture files to submit for analysis.
  • Ensure you are connected to the internet and click OK on the message box.

Please re-enable your anti virus and anti malware programs.

----------------------

If you do not get a message box, please do the following:

There should be a file named [4][email protected] with today's date, located here:

C:\QooBox\Quarantine\[4][email protected]

Please go to this site ==> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/submit-malware.php?channel=4

and include this link:

http://www.techsupportforum.com/f284/geurge-exe-498976.html#post2813943

Using the 'Browse' button, navigate to C:\QooBox\Quarantine\[4][email protected]

Left-click the [4][email protected] file and click 'Open' then 'Send File'.

Please let me know if you successfully submitted the file. Thanks.

NEXT

Go Start > Run and copy/paste the following single-line command into the Run box and click OK:

cmd /c PEV -l "%systemdrive%\qyezz.*" >Log.txt&Log.txt&del Log.txt

A Notepad file will open. Post the contents of Log.txt in your next reply.

Questions:

ComboFix logs show that most of your Windows files fail digital signature check. Did you remember when you updated your Service Pack 3? Was there any problem?

----------------------------

The computer is much more responsive but at times I still get shut out from the internet and it won't load any pages.
Any specific sites that won't be loaded or does it sometimes load the sites and sometimes doesn't? Please give more details.

Can you now connect to the internet? Please try your browsing activity and let me know in your next reply. And please try to update your Avira if you can get the connection.

I can go on the internet but I cannot update my anti-virus. When I click update it says "An error has occured Scheduler is not running" and the computer is tempremental at times. It also does not keep me logged into my forums so everytime I turn off the computer it forgets everything. Also should I update my Anti-Virus first or perform all those steps above?

Thanks

Please perform those steps in my earlier post.

Note that ComboFix may require an update when you drag and drop the CFScript into it. Please allow it.

I suspect your Avira Scheduler service has been stopped. Do the following to set it back:

Click Start > Run, type or copy/paste the following into the run box:

services.msc

In the Services windows that is popped open:
  • Right click on Avira Antivir Scheduler, then select Properties.
  • Next, look for the Startup Type, set it to Automatic from the drop down menu (if it hasn't already).
  • Next, look for the Services status, if it's stopped, click on Start to bring it back.
  • Wait a while for the service to start, then Click OK to close the properties dialog, and exit the Services window.
Now, try to update your Avira Antivirus. It should be running fine. Let me know.

-----------------------

It also does not keep me logged into my forums so everytime I turn off the computer it forgets everything.
This might be due to some setting on your browser, we'll look into this a bit later.

May I know why it took you some time to reply?

That is the log provided from the "run" command.

Avira has succesfully updated itself now and I had no trouble with combofix when installing the system restore points. Reason why I have been taking longer to respond is I just started another job so time is as plentiful as it was before.

Regarding the websites being slow, it happens at random when I startup the computer. Sometimes it will not load any pages and I have to restart it and it goes back to normal loading. I have noticed it recently does not like loading anything and I did have trouble sending the report from combofix. I had to manually upload it and even then it did not want to until a few tries.

Also I have had Avira notify me of a few webgen viruses in my iframe and local settings folders that keep popping up when I visit google.

Hi -

I need to see ComboFix log. Please post C:\ComboFix.txt.

-----------------

I had to manually upload it and even then it did not want to until a few tries.
Was the upload successful?

-----------------

Run GMER once again with the following instruction (make sure you've disabled your antivirus and antispyware applications)

  • Double click the exe file.
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO, then use the following settings for a more complete scan.

Click the image to enlarge it
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Ensure the following are UNCHECKED
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and attach it in your next reply.

**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

Please re-enable your antivirus and antispyware applications afterwards.

Hi Feircepc,

Also, please download MBRCheck.exe to your desktop.
  • Be sure to disable your security programs prior to running the tool.
  • Double click on MBRCheck.exe to run it. Please allow any prompts popped by Windows in order to run the tool.
(Vista and Windows 7 users will have to confirm the UAC prompt)
  • A command window will pop open and run. If any unknown MBR Code is found, you will have further options prompted, at this time please press N then press Enter.
  • Press Enter again to exit the program.
  • If nothing unusual is found, you will be shown the machine MBR status. Just press Enter to exit.
  • A text file named MBRCheck_mm.dd.yy_hh.mm.ss should appear on your deskop. Please post the contents of that file.

---------------------

And, if I understand you correctly, at the present you're not having any more redirect issue and that the only prevailing issue is sluggish connection, which sometimes load site and sometimes don't, and this happens on random sites, not on a specific site?

----------------------

Also I have had Avira notify me of a few webgen viruses in my iframe and local settings folders that keep popping up when I visit google.
Did Avira prompt of the actions to choose along with the pop up? What did you choose?
Have you tried choosing 'Quarantine'? Please do so, and let me know how that goes, in your next reply.

-----------------------

Please check the questions and instructions (in this post and the other one earlier) carefully and give responds to all of them (before you post your reply). In that way, we can save both our times.

Thanks.

The last combofix log I had completed.

--------------------------------------------------

Yes, the files were succesfully uploaded to bleepingcomputer.

Also Avira did give me the option to "Remove" the virus or leave it be and I chose to remove it. After updating and running its scheduled scan it picked up about 23 infections and put them into quarantine.

I also no longer have redirecting problems but my internet connection is still sluggish.

Hi -

Read through this entire procedure completely and if you have any questions, please ask them before you begin. Then either print out, or copy this page to Notepad and save to your desktop for reference as you will not have any browsers open while you are carrying out portions of these instructions.

I am giving you more work to do in this reply, considering that it needs quite some time in between our replies. Therefore, it needs more effort from you to perform all steps. Make sure you do not miss any portion of the instructions below.

Hope it is fine with you.

Also Avira did give me the option to "Remove" the virus or leave it be and I chose to remove it. After updating and running its scheduled scan it picked up about 23 infections and put them into quarantine.
Can you please copy/paste the Avira log?
  • Right-click Avira icon on the system tray, choose Start Antivir
  • On the Overview tab on the right, click Reports
  • Next, on the left, you will see the list of reports. Double-click on the latest one (which you said it quarantined those 23 infections).
  • Copy/paste the log file that pops open, in your next reply.

---------------------

Go to Start > Run and copy/paste the following into the Run box and click OK:

cmd /c del /a/f/q "c:\documents and settings\Default User\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\qyezz.exe"

A command prompt window will open and close again, this is normal.

----------------------------

Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->Control Panel->Add or Remove Programs):

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
Java(TM) 6 Update 7

These are all outdated, and security risks by having them installed still. Unfortunately, Java does not uninstall these older versions when you update, nor tell you that you should. Java(TM) 6 Update 11 can be updated from the Java control panel Start > Control Panel (Classic View) > Java (looks like a coffee cup) > Update Tab > Update Now. An update should begin; follow the prompts.

Going forward, Java will overwrite existing installs, so removing older versions should not be required after this.

Clear Sun Jave cache

Go into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon. (looks like a coffee cup) If you do not see the icon, look to your left and click 'Switch to Classic View'.
  • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
  • Next, click on the Delete Files button
  • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked

    • Applications and Applets
      Trace and Log Files
  • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
  • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

-----------------------------------

I notice you already have Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (MBAM) on your machine. Please do a quick scan with it.
  • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Under the Update tab, click Check for Updates
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
(Should you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here , and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install).
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform quick scan", then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart your computer.(See the Note below)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy/Paste the entire report in your next reply.

** Note **

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

--------------------------

I also no longer have redirecting problems but my internet connection is still sluggish.
Well...your log comes back clean, except for the Windows File failing digital signature and your unknown Master Boot Record (MBR).

Let's get the MBR dump text file for further analysis, and also see if the suspected service is actually running which, if not, may be causing the digital signature verification failure, by the following instructions:

Please re-run MBRCheck after disabling all active protection.
  • After the program has opened, please type Y and then press Enter
  • Then please press 1 and then press enter
  • Then press zero (0) to get a dump file of your C:\ drive's MBR.
  • You will then be prompted to type a location to store the file, please type C:\mbrdump.txt and then press enter
  • Then type -1 to exit the program
  • A notepad file will then be on the desktop, Please copy/paste the contents of that file back to me for analysis. I would also like you to navigate to the file C:\MBRdump.txt and zip it up and attach it in your next reply.

%WinDIR%\PEV.exe -ltf %WinDIR%\\system32\CatRoot\*
) 2>&1
START NOTEPAD CatRoot.txt
DEL %0
Save as filename look.bat to your desktop , choose to save as type "All Files". Click OK.
It should look like this:

Double click on " look.bat " and copy/paste the log that pops up into your next reply.

Yes, the files were succesfully uploaded to bleepingcomputer.
Thanks. Did you manually upload the file?

Questions:
- Do you remember when you updated your Service Pack 3? Was there any issue?
- Did you experience any problem at all when updating your Internet Explorer to version 8?
