Hi all -

I've seen some great responses and problems solved on this forum so hoping you can help me with mine. A few weeks ago, I had a power outage while online and when power resumed, I was no longer able to connect to the internet via my wireless router. My laptops (I have 2, work and personal) both receive the wireless signal from my router (a Linksys WRT54GC) but I get a 'DNS lookup failed' error message when trying to access the internet. My standard set up was Arris cable modem-->Linksys router-->Laptop but I've had to go cable modem-->Laptop via Ethernet in order to access the internet.

Both laptops are running WinXP Pro, SP3 and I ran 'ipconfig/all' on my work one, once when connected via Ethernet and once when I had my wireless connection enabled (but again, not connected to the internet). Results below.

If I wire my cable modem-->wireless router-->laptop and view my network connections, my wired LAN has 'limited or no connectivity' and my wireless LAN is 'not connected'. If I go cable modem-->laptop, my wired LAN works (i.e. I can access the internet) and my laptop picks up my wireless router signal but I cannot access the internet (obviously b/c my ethernet cable is not going into my router, its going to my laptop).

do a full powercycle
and then with Modem>Router>{Cable}>PC

log into the router and goto the status page and post whats there /screen shot

To upload the screen shot to the forum, open the full reply window ("Go Advanced" button) and use the Manage Attachments button to upload it here.
Full details are available here http://www.techsupportforum.com/forums/f136/how-to-use-windows-device-manager-655905.html

see status page on emulator here
Router Status

------------------------------------------------------------------------

How to power cycle

“power cycle” process to reboot or reset the modem/router
  • Switch off all the devices modem, router and computers also unplug their power cables.
  • Wait at least 1 to 5 minutes,
  • Plug the power cords back in, but don’t switch them on.
  • First turn on the modem and then wait for a few minutes for it to settle and all the lights to become stable.
  • Next switch on the router (if a separate device) and then wait for a few minutes for it to settle and all the lights to become stable.
  • Now turn on your computer, You should now be able to access the Internet.

So, I did the power cycle when it first happened. Unplugged everything - the laptop first, then router, then modem, waited 10 mins., then plugged everything back in in the reverse order, ie. modem first, etc - but note the modem and router do not have power switches so I just waited until all the lights on them were fully lit before plugging the next one in. I'll try it again and take a screenshot of the router status page and upload it here.

Ok, after I did the full power cycle, wireless network still produces a signal but will not allow connectivity to the internet. Attached is my router status page - looks like the DNS addresses are new (i.e. ones I haven't seen before) and the error messages I've gotten have been 'DNS lookup failed'. Could this be the issue?

looks like you have a connection on the modem status

Modem > {cable} Router {cable} PC
then use safemode with networking and post an ipconfig /all
Safemode with networking
with a cable connected from PC to router
check the cable - see if there is a light on the router associated with the cable port used , also check if you have a green/yellow light on the PC LAN port (some PCs do not have any lights on the LAN port - so ignore)
- try safemode with networking
as the PC starts keep tapping F8 - a menu appears - choose
safemode with networking - see if that works

Apologies for the long delay in replying, I was out of town.

Ok, below is my ipconfig/all after booting up in Safemode with Networking. I have a cable plugged from my router-->PC and the port light on the router is green. The LAN port light on my PC is not lit (it was flashing yellow during boot up but is now NOT lit.).

I checked my Network Connections and my Wireless Network Connection says 'Not Connected' but (a) it doesn't allow me to Enable it when I right click on it and (b) when I right click and 'View Available Wireless Networks,' my network says Not Connected but then immediately below it says 'You are currently connected to this network...' and the button at the bottom right allows me to Disconnect. Clearly there's something wrong...

What firewall / security suite or anti-virus do you currently have on the PC - or you have ever had on the PC in the past - any trial ware - like Norton, kaspersky or Mcafee or any free security suites like zonealarm, AVG , Webroot etc

lets get the cable connection working first and we can come back to wireless

on that ipconfig /all - you have a cable and a wireless connection

do the following ping tests - when connected by cable
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ping Tests
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post the results in a reply here.
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and paste here.

If you do not have another PC - do you have a phone connected to the internet - can you photograph the result and post the image in a reply

For Windows 8
to open a Cmd Prompt or an Administrator Cmd prompt from the Desktop. Use Win + X and choose Command Prompt or Command Prompt (Admin) from the list.

This should work for all windows version, XP, Vista, W7
Hold the Windows key and press R

then type CMD

then press Enter to open a command prompt box
(A new dialogue box - black with white font, will appear on screen ):

In the command prompt window that opens
ns

Type the following command
Ping 192.168.1.1
Post back the results in a reply here
right click in the command prompt box
select all
enter
control key + C key - to copy
then reply here and
control key + V to paste

Type the following command
Ping google.com
Post back the results in a reply here
right click in the command prompt box
select all
enter
control key + C key - to copy
then reply here and
control key + V to paste

Type the following command
Ping 209.183.226.152
Post back the results in a reply here
right click in the command prompt box
select all
enter
control key + C key - to copy
then reply here and
control key + V to paste
For your information only
these tests will check various stages of the connection, the first ping test, ping default gateway checks to see if you still have a connection to the router.
The next two Ping google.com & Ping 209.183.226.152 tests the connection to internet. google is to test by name and the ping test using a number is checking that a connection exists without DNS.
these tests then confirm if there is a dns issue on the connection.

etaf - after doing the 'Safemode with Networking', I rebooted normally and it somehow seems to have fixed the wireless connectivity (and this was before I did the ping test you advise above)!!! I think I confirmed its fixed - I turned my PC off and on again, unplugged the cable from my router port to my PC, and removed the PC from the docking station to walk around the house - wireless signal is strong and I'm able to access the Internet (finally!) via wireless so all seems to be fixed for my work PC! Thank you!

Problem is, I have my personal PC as well and that still seems to be having problems. The router port that has a cable in it attached to my personal PC is green (and I can access the internet when I'm wired) so I did the same steps as above - safemode with networking (port still green), reboot, and then enabled the wireless connection and disabled the LAN. No luck - wireless says limited to no connectivity and I cannot access the internet. Should I try the ping test on my personal PC?

Below is my ipconfig/all after booting up my personal PC in Safemode with Networking. I have a cable plugged from my router-->PC and the port light on the router is steady green. The LAN port light on my personal PC is steady orange (same as when I was online in regular - not Safe - mode).

I checked my Network Connections and my Wireless Network Connection says 'Disabled, Firewall' and right clicking on it has an 'Enable' option but when I click on it, it doesn't actually Enable it, it seems to just ignore the command.

I will try the ping test if needed (since I didn't do the ping test w/my work PC and rebooting after Safemode fixed the issue) but to answer what AV I use, I have Avast Internet Security Suite on my personal PC.

CyberMan - do not know what a xirrus screenshot is, can you please explain? Thanks.
