Greetings,

I've recently bought a new PC (I7) to replace my old one. My main task was to get most of my files across and set up my new PC as the main computer on the home network. Currently my machine has a printer connected to it which I wish to share with all on the network. I've attached a screen cap of the network as displayed by my modem/router. 2 computers (my PC's) connect via ethernet and the other 2 laptops wirelessly. All computers (except my old PC) run Windows 7 - the old PC runs Win XP SP3.

What I can do so far is transfer files from my old to new PC. Each computer on the network (except the XP machine) can see each other but cannot access each other and despite network discovery + file and printer sharing on, cannot see the printer across the network. I've been doing a bit of research to try and solve my problems but am only getting so far. If there is a resource you could point me to that would be great as I'd like to develop a good understanding of how to manage the network. If I still can't get anywhere I'll come back here for further help.

TIA

Here's is an IPCONFIG report on my main machine:

G'Day,

Followed the recommendations in the link and I managed to get all computers to access the printer on the main computer (Phil-I7). I can get both the computers on ethernet (Phil-I7/Phil-XP) to read/write to each other, so going OK.

However, the 2 laptops will not allow access despite being visible on the network (see dialog1.jpg). Clicking the Diagnose button results in a dialog stating that incoming connections may not be allowed (see dialog2.jpg). The network and sharing permissions are the same for all 3 Win7 computers - it appears as those connected via wireless don't want to be accessible. Interestingly, they (the wireless connected computers) can read/write to/from the main computer (Phil-I7).

Any ideas where to go from here. Most of what I was trying to accomplish has been achieved - I just need to get access to the 2 laptops to get the job finished.

TIA Phil

From the pings it is pointing to the laptop on 10.0.0.13 where the problem lies with the firewall as when any machine pings that machine it times out.

Check the firewall on 10.0.0.13 that it allows file and printer sharing and homegroup in the trusted zone or network check firewall documentation for how to.

Thanks for the reply - sorry I have taken a little while as I've been a bit time poor at home over the past couple of days.

The machine Phil-Laptop had Kaspersky firewall enabled (it has Kaspersky Internet Security installed). I trawled through the settings to find something related to files and printer sharing and could not see anything so I turned off the firewall. This solved the problem with that computer and is now visible to the whole network.

I now have one minor niggle - the other laptop (Denise-HP) whilst visible to the network, does not allow me to acess the shared directory C:\users. I'm alomst there but all I would like it each computer on the network to have access to each's C:\users directory. At least all computers can now access the shared printed which is a win of sorts.

TIA

Leaving the firewall disabled is not a good idea it reduces protection considerably you could try re-enabling the firewall and add the ip addresses of the other computers and printer into the trusted or allowed networks within Kaspersky.

Failing that there is an anti-virus component called Kaspersky Ndis 6 Filter miniport which is there to detect threats but can interfere with connectivity and the dodument below advises to uninstall it and then re-install the component to resolve issues failing that a uninstall or kaspersky itself may be neccessary and then a re-install. An updated version or patch may be available on their website which may help.
Kaspersky Anti-Virus NDIS Filter in Kaspersky Lab 2011 products

Have set the advanced sharing permssions to everyone and given full control you need to do this.

You may have to set the permssions on the actual user account you wish to share also in the advanced sharing permissions also.
