Folks:

My name is Ken and I appreciate any and all advice in advance. I dispense a lot of advice on hi-fi boards, but I know just enough about computers to defer to the experts. Feel free to slap me around and teach me a lesson if I appear stupid or violate any board etiquette. I can take it.

Here's the deal:

My computer suddenly lost all of its cookies for sites I frequent.

Then, right after that happened, Norton told me that it stopped some malicious code.

I started getting a "Generic Host Process for Win 32 Services..." error and my computer started stalling when I went into Microsoft Word or IE.

I updated Windows, updated my HP software (based on a quick Google search), and scanned my entire system with Norton.

Norton says it killed the "Downloader" virus.

My computer is still bringing up the "Generic..." message and when I try to unmute my volume button, it says there are "no active mixer devices available." I'm just waiting for my computer to freeze up again.

What follows is the DDS file and I've attached the "ark" and "attach" files as zipped files:

Update:

I keep getting blocked worm messages from Norton.

Cookies are now lost as soon as I log off IE and then get back on.

I also uninstalled ABC (Another Bittorrent Client) and Maketorrent after reading more advice on this fine sight.

Thanks, chemist.

At the moment, I've got a tech guy at my house. This virus kept inviting its friends in and my computer got stuck in a safe mode loop.

I'm typing from another computer. I will update after the repairs and let you know if I need further assistance.

Issue resolved and an expensive lesson. I paid for four hours of tech work (ouch).

We had to start from scratch and reload everything. Luckily, I was able to save critical files.

The logs I posted here were used by the tech to solve my problems.

Thanks TSF.
