General Windows Troubleshooting Method 101

Hello Everyone,

I am a new member & have been in IT for about 18 years and just wanted to offer some general advice on troubleshooting computer / network issues. Sometimes we forget the simplest things and start barking up the wrong tree. I read something from Microsoft a few years back that I keep in mind while troubleshooting. It is called the DIP-CD method and goes like this:

1.) DEFINE the problem
2.) ISOLATE the cause
3.) PERFORM the repair
4.) CONFIRM the results
5.) DOCUMENT the solution

To remember this, imagine dipping a CD into chocolate.

If you would like more details about each step, I have a little website setup at:

Thanks,

MarioInDallas, MCSA

Hi, sometimes I think it would be nice if MS help sites used this Mnemonic themselves. One of my favorites from my sales days was CMQSINGER to give a salesman meeting a client for the first time.

I agree. MS should practice what they preach. I have used DIPCD for a while and it works great. I appreciate the other memory aids, that is good to know as well!
