Whenever I open Gedit (no matter empty or long text file), everything suddenly becomes so slow. The typing, tab switching in ALL browsers, opening and closing of files everything. It acts as if I'm running my pc on 1gb ddr1 and opened some heavy weight software.
I checked the RAM use of gedit, it's not much. once I close it, everything comes back to normal speed.
Any solution?

I tried few other text-editors, but I found gedit to be the simplest quickest note-taking app.

Gedit is normally fast and lightweight, try the following:

From the teminal start gedit with:
gedit

watch for any terminal messages and post them with next reply, or remove
and reinstall:

sudo apt-get purge gedit
sudo apt-get installl gedit
