Hi!

I was trying to install a game (My Horse and Me) for my daughter from a disc but the installation does not seem to create an executable of any kind. It is a bit of an older game, about 10 years, so it may be a problem with Windows 10.

I have reinstalled the game many times and tried compability settings and running the installer as admin. After installation, there is no start menu shortcut and no executable in the game folders. Using the disc autorun only puts me back to setup.exe. Also tried a torrent to see if the problem was with my disc but it acts the same.

Here is the files as they appear on disc, before installing:

Here is the game files after installation (also on disc, but they are the same files):

Trying to run the "ThePonyGame" batch file opens up a cmd window that seemingly tries to run an .exe file inside another folder:

Code:
cd System

"Reality.exe" -module:ThePonyGame
This, or running the .exe directly, tells me to insert the game DVD even though I have it inserted.

The readme of this game also tells me to use a start menu shortcut, or autorun to run the game. But there is no start run shortcut, and autorun only runs the setup.

Help would be much appreciated. I'm pretty confused.

Wait a second.. cd System ????

That's not a correct reference, is the game legit ? because that reference should usually not be called.. Unless it's being run from the CD/DVD folder and there is a system folder in there...

The game is absolutely legit, I promise. I've had this since ten years ago when it came out and it's a regular, store-bought official copy. I used this same CD countless of times without any issues back then.

Edit// also, if you look at the picture I showed of the game contents, there is a "system" folder in there. So the batch file goes inside it to run Reality.exe.

My apologies, I was a little apprehensive because system is usually not called by 3rd party Apps especially an unknown exe file. I was more worried about you catching an infection from a copy which you might have inadvertently got..

Good to know there is a folder there, that kind of clears the air..

You can try this, open a command prompt and then enter the CDDriveLetter: and hit enter.. So if your drive letter was F: then...

Code:
cd F:
ThePonyGame.bat
Replace the drive letter in the first line with your disc drive letter, let us know how this goes

It's no different, running ThePonyGame.bat just tells me to insert the DVD that's already inserted :(

Ok, some really old games might 'default' to D: drive since home PCs really didn't have that many drives back then..

Can you paste the contents of the profile and Realityengine 'INI' files ?

Incompatibility with Windows 10 is all its can think of, regardless of whichever compatibility settings you use. Reminds me of trying to get NFS II SE running on Windows 7!
I see. Thought there would be a way to run this on Win10, since it's not that old of a game. I'll give it a try running it on a Win7 VM. Thanks for the tip!

Sorry for bumping this thread still - but this didn't help :(
Tried on a Win7 VM (and even a WinXP one) but I still get the same, weird issues. Game creates no executable whatsoever on install, and trying to run any of the other files doesn't work either.

Running ThePonyGame.bat does nothing - the cmd window pops up and immediately disappears, and running Reality.exe just tells me to run it as admin to install a driver (even if I do exactly that, I get the same error).

No need to apologise. I don't think that game creates a launcher application, but uses that ThePonyGame.bat script file to launch it. It also should have created a desktop and/or Start menu shortcut to this batch file, but for some reason it doesn't. I found a brief thread about the same situation as yours here https://www.gamespot.com/my-horse-a...ning-problems-wth-i-bought-a-dud-ga-29178948/

I suggest you create a shortcut on the desktop, point it to the Reality.exe executable being run by the batch script while making sure to add the argument -module:ThePonyGame. Remember to add that space before the argument. After creating the shortcut, right-click the Reality.exe file, go to the compatibility tab and set it to run in Windows XP SP2 and also as administrator.

The target for the shortcut should therefore be
Code:
"<path to game installation location>\system\Reality.exe" -module:ThePonyGame
If the game still doesn't start, something else is wrong with your computer. Could be a missing component such as some runtime library or an unsupported version, especially the graphics drivers.

The driver that Reality.exe was referring to could be the Tages copy protection driver found here www.tagesprotection.com/main.htm?page=minimum.htm. I found it mentioned here

I cannot thank you enough -- finally it works!! The only thing I had to do in the end was install the TAGES driver

It works beautifully now, thank you so much for your help!
