heres a heads up about a new virus called [email protected]

heres what symantec says about the worm :

Due to an increased rate of submissions, Symantec Security Response has upgraded this threat from a Category 2 to a Category 3 as of September 30, 2002.

[email protected] is a mass-mailing worm. It can also spread through Network shares. It has backdoor capabilities. The worm will also attempt to terminate the processes of various antivirus and firewall programs.

It is written in Microsoft Visual C/C++ programming language and compressed with UPX.

Also Known As: W32/Bugbear-A [Sophos], WORM_BUGBEAR.A [Trend], Win32.Bugbear [CA], W32/[email protected] [McAfee], I-Worm.Tanatos [AVP], W32/Bugbear [Panda], Tanatos [F-Secure]
Type: Worm
Infection Length: 50,688 bytes
Systems Affected: Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Me
Systems Not Affected: Macintosh, Unix, Linux
for more info go here Symantec response .

P.S. forgot to add, category 3 on symantec website means that they have more customers reporting that virus than usual so it means its going around more than other viruses/trojans at the moment..thats why I decided to post it here.... enjoy...

Yeah... That is a nice feature... kinda like Macintosh... Y2K compliant since birth, and virtually no viruses (in comparison to PC)

But Who names the viruses? I mean Bugbear is like a registered trademark of TSR, which was bought by Wizards Of the Coast (GRRRRRRR!!!!!!!) So unless the virus writer did it, I'm not sure it's legal.

No.. I wasn't saying they got permission to use the name... I was more in favor of TSR can't really stop the use of the name when it's just 1 person naming a virus, but if it were assigned by say McAffee TSR would have no problem either getting royalties or having the name changed.

Bugbear running worse

apparently, this bugbear virus is getting serious. F-Secure upgraded their alert level for this virus to level 1 which is equivalent to the Love letter or Nimda. Nasty.

If you're running MSIE 5.01 or 5.5, go here to download the patch.

here is a list of possible subject lines of a affected email from McCafee :
