Through the magic of "drag and drop" I can transfer files in bulk from a Microsoft Outlook folder to a folder of the same name in My Documents. The files are in chronological order in Outlook, and are the same when first transferred to the My Documents folder; but when I close and reopen, they're now in alphabeteical order (in the My Documents file).

I know about the "View > Arrage Icons By" command, but it seems to not offer me the option of returning to the original (chronological, as received) state. And if I want to transfer the files one-at-a-time, I can rename or renumber, but that takes forever if you have a lot of files.

Anybody have a solution? Either way, thanks in advance.

Welcome to TSF!

When you copy the files, both the created and modified dates get set to the current time (the files never existed before as you are actually exporting messages, not copying files) so there is no way to restore the original sort order.
If you are in Tile or Icon view they should retain their order if you have the setting checked as me4net suggests, but switching views will re-sort.

Outlook stores all the files inside a container (the PST files) and looks at the email header to get the Received date, which is something Windows Explorer/My Computer was not designed to read.

There might be a way using Visual Basic to export the files and add the date as part of the name but I don't know how. You may want to click the Report button and have this moved to the Microsoft Office Support forum. Someone there may know a trick or two.
