Frequent BSOD's (Vista x64) Need Help

1209 Views 8 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  DT Roberts
I have been having frequent BSOD's for some time now and I cannot for the life of me figure out what the problem is.

I would like some help decoding these BSOD's if possible and would be very grateful for any assistance received.

I am running on a laptop with hybrid power and three nvidia graphics cards

Qosmio X305-Q706 and I have restored to factory settings so it is now an OOBE experience.

The crashed occur randomly whilst doing a variety of things such as gaming, windows media player, file copying etc...

It seems that each BSOD gives a different error everytime, but the most common is ntfs.sys and page_fault_in_non_paged_area

I have uninstalled 90% of the bloatware that came with the laptop however and have disabled most unecessary start up items and services.

· OS - Vista
· x64
· What was original installed OS on system? Vista x64
· Is the OS an OEM version (came pre-installed on system) or full retail version (YOU purchased it from retailer)? OEM
· Age of system (hardware) 18 months
· Age of OS installation - have you re-installed the OS? Recent facory reset
· CPU Intel X9100
· Video Card nvidia 9400m, 9800GTS SLI

· Power Supply - brand & wattage Laptop

Once again I'm very grateful for any help.

I'm sorry for double posting, but I can't seem to edit my thread as I forgot to include the performance monitor report.

So here goes.

Hello and welcome to TSF.

First: Is this a legitimate copy of Windows? I'm getting symbol errors on most of the dumps, and peauth.sys is blamed as the cause of one.

There are only four dumps total, 0x1E, 0x24, 0x50 and 0x3B:

If you see NtfsExceptionFilter on the stack then the 2nd and 3rd
parameters are the exception record and context record. Do a .cxr
on the 3rd parameter and then kb to obtain a more informative stack
    trace.

Before going any further, upgrade to SP2: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...d5-f907-4406-9012-a5c3199ea2b3&displaylang=en

If that doesn't help then we'll check the hard drive for errors. Also, what devices are connected via USB?

Devin

EDIT: Are you on SP2 or not...? System Information says that you are, but the BSOD minidumps say otherwise...

Thanks for taking the time out to look at my problem.

Yes I am on SP2. I thought that these were the most recent BSOD's, however it appears that since upgrading to SP2 none of my BSOD's have been recorded.

I have made sure that the Page File is system managed and on the system drive. I have also checked that it is set to dump the whole kernel into the minimdump folder so all looks good.

I don't understand why the new ones have not been saved.

My OS is an OEM OS and is genuine.

There are no devices connected vi USB except my mouse (Microsoft Sidewinder X8)

I need to figure out why the new minidumps are not being recorded as those are the ones I need to post. I will investigate further.

Follow these instructions to enable dump logging: http://carrona.org/setmini.html

Also, I see that you have Norton installed. It is known to cause instability and is often the cause of BSODs in Vista and Windows 7. Please uninstall it using the Norton Removal Tool: http://service1.symantec.com/support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

Once it's gone, replace it with Microsoft Security Essentials: http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/
Thanks DT, I had it originally set to dump the whole kernel.
Norton was removed already using the NRT.
I have AVG currently installed. Should I still go ahead with the Microsoft Security Essentials installation?

EDIT: Whilst checking the page file settings I noticed that the currently allocated page file size is 4137MB. I have 4GB RAM installed and wondered if this might be the cause of the dumps not being recorded properly. I checked the settings and the page file is system managed and on the OS's drive.
Yes, AVG can do just as much harm as Norton. Uninstall AVG and replace it with ME, then let us know if it helps.

Nice catch regarding the page file. It should be at 8 GB. Follow these instructions to set it manually:
Code:
[b]Change Page File Size in Vista/Windows 7[/b]
1. Click [b]Start[/b]
2. Right-click [b]Computer[/b] and select [b]Properties[/b]
3. Click [b]Advanced system settings[/b] in the left pane
4. On the [b]Advanced[/b] tab, select [b]Performance[/b]
5. Select the [b]Advanced[/b] tab once again and click [b]Change...[/b]
6. Untick [b]Automatically manage paging file size for all drives[/b]
7. Choose [b]Custom size[/b] and make the [b]Initial size[/b] 1.5 times the amount of memory installed in your computer, then change the [b]Maximum size[/b] to 2 times the amount of memory you have installed.
8. Press [b]OK[/b] and restart the computer.
I uninstalled AVG and have manually set the page file size.

Fingers crossed so far so good and since these changes I have not received a single BSOD.

As these STOP errors were happening before AVG was installed I am presuming that the culprit was the page file itself, however I have also gone into msconfig and disabled several services and start up items that were unecessary. I will reintroduce these items one by one until I either find the culprit or can categorically say that it was the page file causing the problems.

Thanks again for your valuable time helping me DT.

I wouldn't reinstall AVG regardless simply because MSE puts less load on the system and seems to do a better job overall. The paging file could definitely be the cause, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you as well. Enabling them one by one is a good idea just to be sure. I'm glad I could help and I'm looking forward to some (hopefully good!) news.
