I have been having freezing problems for about a month now. I have went to http://housecall.antivirus.com/housecall/start_corp.asp and found a virus called ADW tenget A. I did EVERYTHING that I was suposed to do to get it out of my puter. I rebooted and ran housecall again and it is gone now, but my computer is still freezing ..mostly during startup. It seems to freeze after startup only if I am not moving the mouse around. During the screensaver or if its idling. I have no clue on this problem but know I dont want to reformat....I hate putting all my "stuff" back in here. Can someone PLEASE help me???

You might consider a repair installation of Windows, it doesn't require you to re-install everything.

still nothing...

I AM AT MY WITS END .....I have put in my quick restore disks that came with the computer, and it restored it to new factory settings. I am freezing up now more than I was after the quick restore. Could there be anything else besides the virus that is causing this?? It will not boot up completely now..it freezes before windows loads, and I have to shut it down.

If your comfortable with taking the cover off of the computer see if the fan is still working on the CPU.

I took the case off and yes, the fan is running perfectly. I blowed everything out while I was in there. I even unplugged the hard drive and plugged it back up..thinking that might would help..but it didnt. I still freeze up when it starts up.
I am gonna format the hard drive and see what that does. I don't know what else to do. If you can think of anything else ...please..let me know. Any help is appreciated..
THANKS A BUNCH

Have you tried running Spybot or AdAware on it?

yes, and there was nothing that showed up.
I formatted it last night and put back in windows 98 and it did fine while I was instaling but as soon as windows came up, it froze again. I called a friend that knows a little 'bout computers and he said it might be the hard drive going out. Could that be a possibilty? Or could there be something I am overlooking??
Thanks,
Sherry

It is most likely not the hard drive itself. IF you want to make sure, run a thorough scandisk and see if it shows anything wrong with it.

What brand of hard drive are you using?

You may want to try writing zeros to the drive and really clean it off good.

Fdisk and format don't really clean the drive to my satisfaction.

Go here and download PowerMax from Maxtor's Website. Maxtor is now owner of Quantum and this program will work fine.

Also go to the bottom of the page and download the instructions on how to use PowerMax.

The same happened on my friend's computer Packard-Bell with the same drive brand.
However, I put his drive into my computer and checked it ... no problem.
Checked out his computer's memory : OK
Finally replaced the motherboard and everything runs as it used to do !

I put in on a floppy and put it into the computer and booted it up.
It said..The following file is missing or corrupt HIMEM.SYS
There is an error in your config.sys on line 2.
and then went to A:\
I tried putting in powermax and it said that it has to be ran under win32

What now????
lol
I am soo sorry to keep bothering you.
But thank you so much for wanting to help me.

OK I take it that you downloaded PowerMax.....................:D

Put a blank floppy disk into the floppy drive and format it.

Then double click the file that you downloaded and follow the instructions that are presented to you to create a bootable PowerMax floppy.

After you've done this reboot with the floppy in the drive and you will be presented with options. You want to choose write zeros to the drive.

Just to remind you, This will remove all data on the drive and restore it to like new condition.

Nope, it wouldn't go through scandisk. It said that it tried 10 times and there was a program trying to run in windows. And told me to shut the program down and try to run it again...the problem is, I dont know WHAT program is running!!
I did the msconfig and there was nothing checked in startup, as it was in safe mode.
I gave up on it and took it to a friend. He is gonna see what he can do to it...
OH, I ran the powermax and it said that my hard drive passed every test.

Well I thought you were going to write zeros to the drive and do a clean install with your restore disk. But lets see what happens with your friend.................:D
