Im using a dual partition for XP and Ubuntu.
I've forgotten my Ubuntu password and tried to reset according to the guide provided in Ubuntu forum.

I cant load the GRUB prompt, cant get into safe mode.
I think I could have pressed a few wrong button, because now I cant even load ubuntu.

Can anyone out there assist me?

Hi,

What guide did you follow, can you provide a link? Can you tell me what keys you pushed that stopped you from accessing the grub prompt.

Cheers!
Ok what happens when you try to get to grub, and then try to get to the recovery partition? Are you able to get to the root console, or does something else come up?

Cheers!
Hi,

OK, this is very interesting. At any time did you have a screen that looked like this

Ok,

Let me do a little looking. I will be away from saturday till tuesday or so. I won't have a lot of time to be on here. I will look harder when I get back.

Cheers!
This is what i get on my screen

GRUB 0.4.4 2008-10-27, memory: 638k/2037k CodeEndL 0x 42910

find /ubuntu/disks/boots/grub/menu.lst
find /ubuntu/install/boot/grub/menu.lst
find /menu.lst
find /boot/grub/menu.lst
find /grub/menu.lst
commandline
reboot
halt
Are these all options that you have when you boot up? Or is this just what is listed?

If you are still having this problem then I might recommend that you do a re-install of Ubuntu if you aren't loosing anything. Tell me what you think and we can go from there.

Cheers!
Hi,

Do you want to get rid of Ubuntu and start over, or do you want to just stop using linux all together? If you want to get rid of ubuntu and start over you can just reinstall ubuntu from the livecd. I can walk you through installing it too.

If you want to totally get rid of Ubuntu and be done with linux you can load the livecd and use a program called GParted and take care of the partitioning from there.

Let me know what you want to do and we can go from there.

Cheers!
