Something happened to my laptop in my absence, not entirely sure what went on but now when I turn it on I get the black screen and "Operating System not found" message. Have tried reloading windows with a boot CD which didn't work, checked the BIOS order and the Optical Drive is number one. I have no other ideas and I am most frustrated, please help!!!

(Fortunately all my work and files was backed up)

No, in your BIOS configuration there should be an option to view any hard drives connected to your motherboard. NOt in your boot order.

Ok probably going to sound a bit retarded now. Where is that?

At the top of the BIOS Utility I have

Main : Advanced : Security : Boot : Exit

Apparently this problem is common in my laptop also - Sony Vaio

The Main page has; Bios Version, Machine Name, Serial Number, UUID, System Date, System Time and Total Memory.

Under the Advanced tab I get Primary IDE Adapter: 40008MB which fits the description of my only Hard Drive.

Argh, I can't get inside it to find that out... the only screws I can see to get into it are machine screwed on - they do not fit my screwdriver which I usually use for laptops/pcs.

set the bios to boot from cd first
pop in the cd and reboot and choose install
when it says press R for repair
press R and you should find yourself in the recovery console
