I have a computer that I would like to do a clean install on because when I shut it down I get a stop:C000021a logon error message. It says that the system had to shut down and the only thing I can do then is turn the power off to restart it. I did try to reinstall xp and at the begining it said there was another logon program that would not allow windows logon to work. It said I should remove this but I have no idea where or what it is. If I do a fomat of the hard drive will that take care of it ? Is there some place to get easy to follow intruction to wipe the drive and reinstall XP? I do not need to save anything that is on this drive, it is only used for my son to play games and browse the internet.

IF you must - you must!

re/formatting a hard drive kills everything, DEAD!

to wipe your drive clean try [email protected], it's at:-

http://www.killdisk.com/downloadfree.htm

a freebie that is/was usually used with a bootable floppy (remember those things? ah! . . . happy days, eh?)

my, how things have changed, i see you can cut it to a bootable cd now

fairly clear instructions are also available on their website alongside the download option.

good luck.

let us know how you do  .

For a comprehensive guide on installing windows XP, take a look here:-

http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html#steps

Do bear in mind that if you zero the drive you will wipe everything - which includes such things as factory installed copies of Windows XP. However, as long as you have an original Windows disc with the full version of XP on, you are OK.

When the installation has completed, put your main-board drivers in first, and then the rest of your drivers, followed by windows updates.

I do wonder whether this could explain your problem:-
