this has happening to me on and off for a month or so now,

sometimes when i open a folder, in the sidebar on the left of the window, the icons have a little magnifying glass hovering over them, also my cursor has the search circle thing appear under it, once this happens every folder i open does the same thing sometimes the file icons in the main window do not show up either.

the only way i can stop this is by re-starting my laptop but then a day or so later it will start happening again,

i have had a search about on the internet but nothing really shows up as the search words are to varied.

this is a image i took of the problem,

anyone know what i have to do to stop this from happening ?

thank you.

Hi, I doubt it's a cache problem, usually a desktop.ini corruption effects desktop icons your problem appears different. Can you open the programs when you double click on the icons, what AV program are you running it appears as though something is running in the background that delays the opening ... does the magnifier go away and is all then normal?

A Icon cache rebuild will do no harm, however if you do it, do it right (Shawn's fix isn't)
Go to start search and type:- cmd, right click the returned cmd.exe and select "run as administrator" at the prompt type:- (press enter after each line)

taskkill /im explorer.exe /f (your desktop will go blank)
CD %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local
attrib -h iconcache.db
del iconcache.db
explorer.exe (your desktop will come back) NO need to restart.

You probably have Microsoft Narrator running. Hold down the Windows Key and press U. Under Options for Magnifier, click Stop.

i have looked at Microsoft Narrator & Options for Magnifier & they are both not running.

i have McAfee Total Protection running as my AV,

most of the time when this happens the main icons in the window show up, but sometimes they don't, i only have problems when the icons on the left/in the sidebar have the search/magnifier icon hovering over them, i have never had the search/magnifier icon over the normal icons inside a window.

when i have tried the cmd proceeder, i don't get any prompts, in the cmd window i just get C:\Windows\system32> & nothing else, i don't know if i am doing something wrong.

i don't know if this is connected in anyway (actually this started about the same time) when i go to change a file name, well re-name it about 50% of the time i get a window flash up & say that Windows Explorer needs to re-start (words to that effect) i let it re-start & then try again sometimes it allows me to re-name the file but if i have a number to re-name it always happens again, even if i manually re-start Windows from the Start Menu.

i have seen that other people have had problems re-naming files, so i'm not sure if the two problems i have are connected or not,

i have run Microsoft Fixit a couple of times & it has come up with nothing, maybe Windows Explorer has become corrupted perhaps ?

i do not have any virus's or malware issues.

Go to Start/Search and type CMD, Right click the CMD icon and Run As Administrator. In the Command Prompt type SFC /scannow and press enter. This will replace any missing files.
