My Win98se system froze and crashed several times last week.

Many settings were clobbered. I've managed to fix all but a few.

Here is one that is irritating.

I am used to seeing a folder, viewed "as a Web Page," displayed like this:

(The Recycle Bin still displays correctly. I don't know why.)

What I'm getting now looks like this:

The large, heavily pixilated icon and horizontal line that follows it are irritating. I don't want them there.

I've spent hours in "Folder Options" trying all the combinations, but I can't get rid of them and return to the display I'm used to seeing these past six years.

Please, someone out there knows how to fix this.

How can I repair it?

Foldeer display incorrect

Thank you for your suggestion, Geekgirl.

Unfortunately, the RESET did not correct my folder appearance.

Here are some screen shots:

I'll be happy to try any other suggestions you have.

Right click on an empty spot on the Desktop and click Properties. In the Display Properties, click the Effects tab, what is checked in there?

In the Appearance tab, is it set to Windows Standard scheme?

How about the settings tab, what is the Colors and Screen area set to?

What concerns me is the "crash". Why did it crash and is it in jepoardy of crashing again....

Run the System File Checker

Go to the Run box on the Start Menu and type in:

sfc

This command will immediately initiate the Windows File Protection service to scan all protected files and verify their integrity, replacing any files with which it finds a problem.

In all likelihood you will be prompted to insert the Windows CD.

Forlder display incorrect - SFC

I did run SFC, Geekgirl.

It advised me MSI.DLL was potentially corrupted. So I replaced it. Big
mistake. That was, in fact, the .DLL problem I mentioned. I restored it
from the SFC save and WORD, Spell Checker and other things resumed working.

I bought this PC in 1999. It's running Win98se. It's old. It crashes
sometimes. I know you're affiliated with Microsoft, but by now you should
know their software does freeze and crash occasionally. I'm used to it.

I appreciate your efforts in trying to help with this problem, but I think it's
probably time to close this trouble ticket.

How do I close this thread?

(Most forums have a menu item with which to do this. I couldn't find one.)

What you might want to do is a Repair Install if all of your issues are not resolved. This consists of installing the O.S. right over top of the existing one. You should not lose any of your information but will need to install the critical updates again.

I can close this thread if you want, most times we leave it open but mark it Resolved

Folder display incorrect

Geekgirl - Thank you for your help in all this.

I have done a "Repair Install" several times over the years. Most recently
it failed when it could not find a driver which it identified simply as
"Unknow Device." Not helpful.

Can I mark this one RESOLVED just by stating such in the title?

If not, what's the proper method?

Thank you again for your help, especially since Win98se is no longer
supported by MS.
