Flash drive converting file names to garbage

2541 Views 2 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  MillieT
I have a 2 GB flash drive someone gave me and when I get it about halfway filled up with files it starts to convert the later ones to names with garbage and then I cannot access the files. The older files all seem to be ok. I check the used space and I have over half left sometimes (1 GB) but it keeps happening. I've already formatted the drive several times. Would the USB drives in the front of the pc pose a problem vs the USB drives accessed through the back (on the motherboard)? I'm also wondering what is the best brand of flash drive so that I may buy another one to see if I have the same problem. Does anyone have any knowledge of this problem themselves and can tell me how to fix it? I read the tutorials on how to use the drive and I am not doing anything wrong as far as I can tell. Thanks for any help.

Format the drive, and then test again. If the issue continues, the drive is likely faulty. You can double check by testing the drive on another PC.

Any of the name brands are fine. Just keep in mind that ALL flash drives, regardless of brand, aren't considered reliable.
Thanks Dogg, I think the key words here were "someone gave it to me". LOL I will, though, format it one more time and try it on another pc at your suggestion. I am disappointed to learn flash drives are not very reliable. Thank you again.
