First time build, feedback needed!

706 Views 7 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  jonathan_imo
This is my first time building a PC and I have no prior experience at all. As far as I know all of the parts of this build could be completely incompatible. That is why I have come here! With the collective knowledge of everyone on this forum, I suspect I can make the perfect machine.

I would like to use it for some multiplayer gaming and basic things like word processing (I'm a journalist) and possibly some photo editing with photoshop.

Without further ado, here is my build on a wishlist at newegg.com: http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=15095826

Thank you all in advance for your input!

Asus or Gigabyte are better Mobo's.
The PSU is comsiderably under powered for the 5770. You need to he here-CORSAIR 650W $90.

OCZ-Corsair-G.Skill are better brands for performance RAM.
SSD Hdd's are WAY overpriced. Go with an SATA drive and put the saving toward the Corsair PSU.
Cases are a personal preference but Rosewill cases are constructed from very lightweight material. CoolerMaster & Antec have some very well built economic Mid-Towers.
I didn't want to create a new thread for the same issue.

I was hoping for maybe a bit of feedback on this build. I'm basing it on two issues, primarily: budget and a computer game. Without a life story, I need to spend as little as reasonably possible. Secondly, I am trying to play The Old Republic when it releases. I know it is early, but I am hoping got take advantage if any pieces go on sale. I will finish the build by December. Anyway, the only pieces I really need to point out:

CPU: I'm hoping for the quad so I won't need to update later on
Motherboard: Option 1 and Option 2
I know the Asus is a favored MoBo, but I see no need for the second PCI slot, plus I found the ASRock cheaper here and there, plus it has the USB 3.0 for the future. I wonder about the brand, though..
GPU: Low end currently, but I'm sure it can run an MMO, which will be the main need for a video card
I've looked at a PSUs, but it's had for me to commit to paying 70 or 80 dollars when there so many cheaper. I could really use the help on this on.
Display: Bargain display. Mainly, I just want something with DVI and flat panel. My TV will be a few feet away and I will have my videos on my hard drive playing on my TV, so, the display is something I will cut back on if possible.

Most everything else I can handle, I'd just love some advice if anyone would care to share. I've read the stickied thread on recommended builds, but this is what I was kind of aiming for, I think. Thanks a lot.

CPU looks good.

Take the ASUS motherboard...

I was searching around and found this. Same price, a bit more with the shipping. But had SATA 6 and USB 3.0 and you said you didn't prefer having a second PCI slot and it only has one. Only this is that more bare than the one you chose. Not as many USB slots also, keep that in mind.

GPU should be good enough to do some Old Republic gaming, atleast on normal/lower settings. Even then, game doesnt come out for a bit so you could save up for a better one down the road.

Display IMO, is just based on the buyer's preference.

Thanks for the advice, Tyree... I sort of went and completely changed the build around an intel CPU. If anyone would like to take a look at it and give me a little more feedback, I would, again, appreciate it!

Also, a suggestion for a good (not too expensive ~$80) video card would be helpful.
Take a Look at this card

Also an extra $10 for this psu would be worth it for future upgrades...The 550 and the 650 are both the same price after rebate...spend a little more now and save in the future
Very much appreciated shotgn! Still kept everything within my $800 budget as well.
