gonna build it over summer. budget is about $1000, not specifically for gaming or anything, but a little multitasking, possibly image/video editing/encoding and other random stuff

here's the list of hardware i'm looking at

processor: intel core i7 920
$289 at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115202

mobo: EVGA X58
$270 at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813188046

oh, and the processor and mobo come with a 25$ discount :)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.183513

gfx card: nvidia xfx gtx 260 black edition
$180 at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150330
idk if getting the black edition is rly worth it, cus its just an overclock probably... maybe it has better cooling. but ill take any gtx 260 core 216 from evga or xfx

hdisk: WD Cavier black 640gb
$75 at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136319

ram: OCZ XMP 6gb
$73 at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227388

PSU: OCZ StealthXStream OCZ700SXS 700W
$70 at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817341019

These two ocz products seem to be a little too inexpensive... idk how the quality is, but i can throw in more money into these

case: antec 300
$60 at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129042

Total: $992

i already have a somewhat old cd drive and an operating system disk

questions

1. is everything compatible, and should i choose different hardware
2. im rly thinkin about getting a better fan for overclocking, cus i dont want my cpu to hit 80C with the stock fan. i like the Noctua NH-U12P SE1366, but i know that it probably is too large for a mid tower like the antec300. well, i wouldn't mind running my computer without a side panel.. better air flow too..any suggestions? also thinking about replacing noctua's fans with these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835220014
nearly double the cfm should help out my cpu, but its prob. overkill.
i don't care about noise as long as its under 50db.
3. how much will prices drop by july/august?ive been waiting for months and the only thing to have dropped price significantly is the gtx 260. also, will there be some MAJOR hardware improvement by then (i mean something on the scale of core 2 to core i7).
4. will any of these prices drop significantly during black friday

Needs more power. Look at the corsair 750w or 850w power supplies.

If it were my build i would go in a different direction, not using an i7. Saves a good ammount of money with very little performance decrease. Although i can say the 1-2 times i have dealt with i7 builds i have been pleased.

well, i understand that the i7 doesn't improve gaming performance too much, but i would still want it cus im gonna do video encoding and other stuff... which the i7 processors are very fast at.

im not sure if a 850w psu is rly worth it... so im going with corsair's 750W
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139006
its $110 with MIR, so fourty more bucks

new total: $1032

any recommendations for the cooling?

700W should be fine if you're not planning to upgrade in the future. Just in case, maybe get a 750W.

Whoa, that's a pretty nice build there for $1000. Even when I built my PC only a couple of years ago (yes, I'm behind on the times) those specs would've cost something like $1500-2000.

If you're not overclocking or anything, stick to the stock coolers.

psu: i think i'll stick with corsair's 750w... partially because of its reliability... and partially because corsair is headquartered in the city where i live :)

ram: i think that 6gb is way too much unless im workking with CAD, which i wont be doing, or if i use 2/3 gb as a temporary ram drive. otherwise ill go with 3 gb

ram: OCZ gold 3gb ddr3 1600
$30 at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227368

four months ago it was priced at >$90 for 3gb, so i decided to go with 6gb cus the 3gb stuff was overpriced then. now... who knows wth happened. actually, im not too surprised because one gb ram only costs 10 cents or so to produce iirc.

new total: $989

overclocking: yes i will be later, but not until a few months after getting the hardware. i want to make sure that none of the hardware falls apart within one month. so stock cooler for now... gonna get the noctua l8r with arctic silver paste and overclock to 3.2ghz or something

so how well would the noctua cooler fit in the antec300?? i think that it doesn't even fit at all. or maybe i can just drill a big square in the side panel so that the cooler fits :)
