Firewall!?!

2577 Views 14 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  TheTechIsIn
I have only been on this forum a coulple times but I have to say it is great. I am just getting into the computer industry and I am loving all this computer know-how!

.....Anyways....I was reading a thread about firewalls on here and the other day a friend of mine about went nuts when I said I didnt have one and I am just wondering do I need one? With these connection tests and the things I am reading, it kind of worries me, but I just dont know enough about them do know what to do. Any suggestions?

Well [email protected] first of all, do you use dialup or broadband. If your on dialup, there isnt too much to worry about since your not connected all the time and you probably dont stay on long each session. If your on broadband, cable or DSL, YES get a firewall! Its a real good safety precaution. For a good firewall, head on over to www.zonelabs.com for a FREE firewall called ZoneAlarm. Its easy and does a good job! :D
Okay...basically I am going to do a real quick/basic computer security 101 course... so all those interested listen up.
First of all computers have ports.. they are software created methods of sending and receiving certain types of data. the most common ones are port 21 which usually handles FTP, and port 80 with usually handles HTTP (webpages) The problem is with most operating systems these ports are left open, and since they go both ways this allows for hackers to enter your computer and screw things up. What a firewall does(usually) is it monitors all of your ports, and tells data that your not currently using that the port it is trying to get into is closed. (An example would be if your using you web browser the firewall will let stuff in on that port, but not the others) What sets ZoneAlarm apart is instead of saying that "We don't want any" to the incoming data like most firewalls, it says that "There's nobody here" which in the case of hackers takes you off the list of possible places to try. The next part of things is that there are hardware firewalls... you can probably go pick one up for like $20-30. They do the same thing as Zone Alarm, by filtering the data before it hits your computer. The problem with these is that most of these aren't configurable. So if you don't like how it's set up your kinda stuck.
But like DJ said if your on dialup.. it won't do too much. (unless you have a static IP... you'll know if you do)
I hope this answers your question.... class dismissed :D

Ummm... Whats a port again, teach? Sorry couldn't resist. Pretty good explaination though.
"Danger, danger Will Robinson"

Little addition don't forget (All Microsoft users) that Port 135
(RPC) is ALWAYS open and excepting Internet connections on the following OS's: Win-NT,Win2000,XP Pro&Home so if your using these OS's you need a firewall it is the ONLY thing that blocks this port and plenty a hacker/script kiddies know about this and will target that port.

fire wall

I have win me and a dail up, and according to that guy that has the test on his website I have the slowest dialup in the good ole U>S>A> What concerns do I have. I unhook and turn off the computer and disconect the phone line when done. I have a data line, not useing My phone line. Jimdoss
Fire Wall

I went to the Grc.com and could not get in. All I got was this page was not aviable. Jimdoss
I'll admit the security 101 was a little cocky, but I was at a loss of words on how to put it so that it might get attention. Danrak, if you would like to further elaborate on what a port is so that the newest of newbies could understand you, I'd love to hear it... that was the best I could do at the time. (seriously though.. I'm interested in a better description)
Are there really that many hackers out there? I downloaded ZoneAlarm and it is blocking IPs left and right. Im gonna say about 10 in a five minute period. Is this normal? I mean I have only been using it for 5 days and look at the list...

...man this makes me not even want to have the internet.

Most of those were programs attempting out bound access, Nortan, Generic Host, Qmngr, Service and Control, Zone-alarm!, Outlook, couple others.... You have to let some things through the firewall or all you'll get is error messages and no connections.

I don't know about the others that seems like a lot for such a short time, my cable connection has blocked about 300 connections from inbound sources to date (in the last 3 months) so I don't know.. check for spyware, or back-door programs, maybe someone knows you should be there but now that your firewalls up you not there anymore.
Most of the time the blocks are happening when my computer is idle. And I have all the progs that I use configured so they are allowed to connect. I went to get something to eat a little bit ago and I came back a half an hour later and there were 26 blocks. Now I am just sitting here working on some Access homework and its blocking one right after another. I dont have anything running but Norton. I dont know...it just seems like a lot of attempts coming from outside, but I dont really know that all the info means.
Btw I was wondering what happens when I turn my computer off? Does the firewall keep working?

I'll admit the security 101 was a little cocky, but I was at a loss of words on how to put it so that it might get attention. Danrak, if you would like to further elaborate on what a port is so that the newest of newbies could understand you, I'd love to hear it... that was the best I could do at the time. (seriously though.. I'm interested in a better description)
I didn't mean it as an insult. I thought it was a good explaination. Sorry if it came off that way.

As for zone alarm it will only be active when it is active on your computer. If you had a hardware based firewall then it would be active as long as it has power and is connected.
Re

That zone alarm is $49.95 now. I thought that $30.00 was high. By the time you buy all the protection you need it cost more that the computer. Jimdoss And only 3.5Megs
:coffee:

Zonealarms freeware version is more that adequate protection. With the pay version you get some extra bells and whistles, pop-up blocking, and tracing utils, but if you don't know what to do with that stuff anyway, then whats the point of buying it.

I recommend (personally)to anyones who's just looking for a good firewall that will work but come toy-less, just download the freeware version.
