Firefox/Flash Error

1607 Views 6 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  mtoxrdr
I am running XP, Firefox Version 2.0.0.1, and the newest version of flash. I keep getting this error. "Illegal Operation In Plug-In, Shockwave Flash, The Plug-In performed an illegal operation, You are strongly advised to restart Firefox". I get that error on about 20% of the pages I view. And if I get it enough times, Firefox just crashes. I have tried uninstalling both and reinstalling. I even deleted the plugins folder before the reinstall and nothing seems to help. I have done some research and there seems to be many people with this same problem. The common consensus is that it is caused by some sort of virus hidden deep in the system32 folder. I even heard a few people say that it causes your browser to go to the wrong location when you click on a link. This has not happened to me on Firefox, but lately it has been happening on IE. So now both my browser are malfunctioning. Please help. I have done multiple virus scans and Adaware scans and nothing helps. Here is a HJT log.

Hi mtoxrdr

Follow the advice here and see how it goes: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Macromedia_Flash

BTW this isn't the section to post the HJT log. You'll find that towards the top left on the index page.
No Luck

I deleted those file names from my system32 file and it seemed to cure the problem. I was able to browse the internet for an hour before experiencing the problem again. Any other suggestions? Should i Repost my original in the HJT section?
If you type about:plugins in the address bar and hit enter, under "Shockwave Flash", what version is it?

Did you delete npmozax.dll from C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\ too?
What about GetFlash.exe and GetFlash.exe.manifest? .. they also need to be deleted from the above directory.

List your extensions/themes aswell please, a conflicting extension and theme can cause this.

Visit a site where you get this problem, make a note of its URL and then close Firefox. Next run Firefox SafeMode from the Start menu and see if you get this error again.
I am using version: Shockwave Flash 9.0 r28. npmozax.dll does not exist. GetFlash.exe and GetFlash.exe.manifest existed in my Windows folder but not in the Program Files/Mozilla folder. I deleted them from the Windows folder. This is a copy of the details in the extensions folder. Is this what you wanted? I don't know how to list themes.
Brandres.dll
fullsoft.dll
master
qfaservices.dll
qfaservices.xpt
talkback
talkback.cnt
talkback-|10n

I tried starting mozilla firefox in safe mode and the error message still came up. So then I tried it again disabling plug-ins and it still came up. Some of the people on other forums said something about it being related to a virus. Do you think thats logical?
From my experience on MozillaZine I've not come across this being a virus issue at all but an incompatibility one, simply. A simple virus scan will show you that better.

Go to Tools>Add-ons in Firefox and under "Extensions" list all you have and under "Themes", list all you have back.

The other fix to this is when you downgrade Flash to version 7 or 8 and it can work many times.
Under extensions, all it says is Talkback 2.0.0.1 and under themes all it says is Firefox (default) 2.0 I have heard a bunch of people saying that 7.0 won't play movies or video clips that were created using 9.0
