I have an ATA/100 hard disk drive but im unsure if Im using the right cable with it. Is there a way to find out whether the drive is actually running at ata100/66/33 etc.... thanks

Cruise to AIDA32 and download their Enterprise version. Look under Storage/ATA, and it will tell you the current rate, and the maximum the drive is capable of.

As far as cables, the 80 conductor cable has finer pitch wires, just compare your IDE cable to the floppy cable, if the wire pitch is the same, you don't have an 80 conductor cable.
