Find out whats going in and out (networking)

889 Views 2 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  hal8000
Hey guys, I noticed something odd this evening. AVG told me it was scanning an outgoing email message. This is really strange because I don't have any email programs running (that I know of). This leads me to believe some information is going out that I don't want going out.

I know about netstat, but what is a little bit more practical to figuring out whats going in and out. I'd like to know the program and also the data that it is sending out/in.

And don't tell me to use a firewall, that's not my goal here.

You may have Spam emails. They send automatically. Head over to the security centre and read the 5 steps before posting a hijack This log.
Our analysts will help you to clear your system of anything bad that may be hiding in there.

Also, keep looking back to this topic as others may post with solutions, advice.
What is the result of netstat -a ? If you have no browser open then I would be suspicious if you have any established connections.

Download hijackthis, run a scan and then create a new user, run hikack this and compare the results again. (This wont be particular useful if all your users are running with admin rights). I would set an admin password of your XP and restrict
priveledges of your normal users, this way things are a little more secure.
