Files locked by unknown application

Since installing WinXP i am frequently troubled by files that i am unable to rename, move or delete. I get an error stating that the file is being used by some other application. I find this a little strange since this will also occur if the PC has just booted up. There are no other Apps open, nor is there anything that looks suspect in the task manager.

The files that tend to be affected are DivX (avi), the strange thing is that sometimes i can delete a file with no problems after having had trouble touching it for hours/days before hand. I never experienced anything like this with Win2k - any ideas anyone..?

I can't understand why you would get that when trying to move or rename a file unless it's a .dll system file which alot of programs in xp use. If I'm reading you correctly the DivX file contains .dll files which you must have inorder for your operating system to run so it's important not to remove nor rename them. There are other ways but I would not do it. If you get that error 9 times out of 10 thats why. Even if you install a game you got at the store this can happen. Becareful of what you remove or you'll be back on here asking how to restore your system.
The files are just straight .avi files - nothing to do with .dll files. They're simply movie files that i download from Direct Connect to watch. I know better than to touch .dll files :winking:

It's probably something real simple that i'm missing, but for 5 months now i've been troubled by certain files that i've downloaded that will not budge. I forgot to mention before, i can on occassion delete the files using a DOS prompt... not all the time though.
