file and print sharing

1813 Views 9 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  johnwill
I have just installed a wirelessG router # WRT54GS-BP... and an adapter
# WUSB54GC.

The network works (sorta) I can get on the internet

The router is hard wired to one computer and wirelessly connected to the other.

I can get on the internet but everything i use to do to get file and print sharing up does not work.
Is there something special because this is wireless that i'm probably not doing

Thanks,
Nate

Turn off any firewalls for debugging. If the firewall is the problem, you'll have to configure it to allow access to "trusted zone" addresses. Note that some firewalls must be completely uninstalled to stop them from affecting your networking.

PING each computer by IP address, and if successful, PING by name. You can obtain the IP address of a computer by opening a command prompt (DOS window) and typing IPCONFIG. This should work for any Windows version. A failure here needs to be corrected before you go any farther.

All computers should be in the same workgroup for computer browsing to function properly. File & Print Sharing has to be enabled on any computer you wish to share files or printers from. You also need to actually share the resource in question from My Computer, right click on the drive/printer/folder, and select sharing.

If you encounter difficulties accessing computers that are visible in Network Neighborhood, make sure the computer being accessed has an account with the same name/password as the system connecting to it uses to login.

While the default NetBIOS setting is correct for normal network configurations, it's possible for it to be altered, and it costs nothing to make sure it's correct. NETBIOS over TCP/IP must be enabled for normal network browsing.

File and Pring Sharing

Johnwill:

I know this is bad but I cannot find any option for a general file and print sharing. Each individual resource i can find how to share but I cannot in general enable file and print sharing ....

thanks,
Nate
Im having the problem where one of my computers is unable to connect even though the puter is showing up in workgroup. It is the same problem as in the other post that has 50,000 views. Seems like micro would fix this. My question is why do we have to use netbios/tcp. Why not just use tcp/ip??
thanks
You first enable file/print sharing, then you enable the individual resources. There isn't a "universal" switch to do it all at once.

As to the second issue, what is the "exact" error you're receiving. I did a search on "the other post that has 50,000 views" and Google returned no hits.

Johnwill:

What do you mean when you say 'enable file/print sharing' I guess i don't know how to do that.

Is all I need to do is enable file print sharing on the individual directory i'm concerned about? I actually don't see anything in my system that says file and print sharing except for help files and they do not take me to any place that works for what i'm trying to do.

thanks,
Nate
microsoft help

I am looking for help on the previous problem from the MS Help files

in network problems I'm told to go to network connections and click the TAB Computer Name. There IS NO TAB BY THE NAME OF 'COMPUTER NAME. in fact there is not tab at all.

What is it I'm missing here ?

I cannot follow those instructions if they lead nowhere?

thanks,
Nate
Right click on My Computer, Properties, and select the Computer Name tab.
